If you are here asking: "Is this a science meme?"

Probably, yes. We use the Dawkins definition of meme: a replicating idea, not just an image macro with a fact on it. A good post here doesn't need to teach you something. It needs to make you ask something: who, what, where, when, and especially why or how.

Science isn't a filing cabinet of facts, it's a conversation. For example, a photo of an eel or other localized wildlife counts because most people never see one, and wonder is the first step of inquiry. A car meme counts if it makes you curious about what's under the bonnet. If you want to talk about something you noticed in the world, chances are someone else wants to talk about it too.

We moderate for vibe, not category. Pruning is light, especially where a post creates interesting discussion. Experimenting is encouraged.

See the pinned paper on Shitposting as Public Pedagogy if you want the academic case for why this works.

Imagine going through all the trouble of pulling this stunt off, just to find out that the only thing it really did for society is to give it a new meme template.

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au 33 points 4 days ago (5 children)

Well, if you’re gonna go through all that trouble, don’t unveil the world’s most useless fucking sign. They deserve to be a meme.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yeah... a message of peace? Super lame.

Don't they know promoting hatred and violence is what all the cool kids are into now?

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au 0 points 4 days ago (2 children)

And what impact do you think that had? Real impact. Nothing? Is that what you guessed? Because you’re right!

[–] irish_link@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Right?!

They should post stupid stuff online for fun instead! That makes a real difference!

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au 2 points 3 days ago

Well they started a meme. So I guess that’s something.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What impact do messages of hatred towards your enemies have?

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au -3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What impact have messages of “love vs power” ever had on society?

I think… none.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Again, what impact do messages of hatred towards your enemies have?

It's possible flying a banner on a big building won't have any impact no matter what message you put on it. Do you really think people would change their view on any issue because of a slogan on a flag?

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au -1 points 3 days ago

I think people are smarter than you, yes.

[–] erusuoyera@sh.itjust.works 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The vapidness of the original message is what makes the memes work.

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au 3 points 4 days ago
[–] sbv@sh.itjust.works 14 points 4 days ago

It was a pretty shit sign.

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 3 points 3 days ago

It was made for a proposal

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I do wonder what kind of sign would be 'useful', though.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Eat at Joe's Free coffee between 9 and 11

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 2 points 4 days ago

I'd buy that for a dollar!

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] kibblebits@quokk.au -5 points 4 days ago

Not how that works.

[–] Art3mis@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Their "stunt" was an ad for their netflix special. They are also sponsored by an energy drink comoany. They had the observation deck cleared and stuff.

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

What is the story behind this new meme format?

[–] erusuoyera@sh.itjust.works 17 points 4 days ago (1 children)

For anybody also having a hard time reading that partially folded flag, or finding the text within the 1000 words article, it's this:

"When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace"

Agreed with the other comment, that's the most useless sign ever.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Even more useless was celebrating their engagement that way. My wife and I just posted about it on Facebook and went out for burgers or something.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 4 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Just a couple of attention-whores doing attention-whore things.

[–] xzinik@feddit.cl 2 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

but you have to admit that while they are a new meme template, they look kinda badass

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The whole point of social media is to be an attention whore. You're on social media right now.

[–] the_mighty_kracken@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, but who doesn't post to Facebook occasionally?

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 days ago

But they probably had some really hot self-aggrandizing sex in jail afterwards to celebrate their engagement

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 26 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Mitochondria was imprisoned by cells and forced to labour to feed them. ACAB

yeah i remember how shocked i was recently when i told somebody "the farmers don't grow food, the plants grow food". and they responded with "yeah but that's their fate. plants literally exist to be eaten" and i was like "what if you said that about people? some people literally exist to be enslaved?"

point is, we treat nature with no respect about how it feels. this goes for plants but also other animals. it's quite weird if you think about it. anyways, this discussion is getting weird.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 days ago

Are you trying to say we need to grant plants personhood?

I think you might be creating a false equivalence when comparing using plants for stuff to literal slavery. Just a little bit.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 days ago (2 children)

It's pretty horrible. The more I understand abt plants, the more I'm like - shit, this really don't wanna be eaten.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not true: many plants (such as nuts and fruits) demand to be eaten, and some literally cannot continue to grow unless they pass through an animal's digestive tract first.

What they want is different than what you want.

[–] xep@discuss.online 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

The plants want the fruit to be eaten by a specific animal. Human beings do not have any such symbiotic relationship with any plant I know of. You'd get very sick, for example, if you ate a Cassowary Plum.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 1 points 3 days ago

The power of science offers humans the ability to eat many things that were not originally designed to be eaten by us.

[–] psud@aussie.zone 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

May I point you towards Friendly Carnivore

Plants can't run away so they defend themselves with chemical warfare. Most of us can detoxify a lot of the common food plants, but some of the accumulated toxins get most people in the end — a lot of the diseases of aging are effects of the poisons plants use

At the lowest end they block nutrient absorption like tea blocks iron

As you say, the more you know the less good they seem

If you're intolerant of some of the common food plants (for me it's wheat and cocoa. Apparently my ancestors didn't have wheat until 6000 years ago, and cocoa came with the Colombian exchange so no surprise many of British stock can't handle all of those plants' attacks

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Meat really don't wanna be eaten too.

[–] r3g3n3x@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago

This is necessary. Life feeds on life.

[–] psud@aussie.zone 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

No beef complains before the captive bolt gun turns the brain off forever

They are protected from other predators which would give them a much more painful death

[–] JillyB@beehaw.org 3 points 4 days ago

...I'm not a vegan but wow. Cattle live a whole life of horror. Pretending that eating meat is more moral than than eating plants because they suffer less is plain deliusion.

Well except that one cow

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

So are all plants and animals other than humans.

Nothing in nature is getting married before having kids except us.
