This is why the Simpsons is set in Springfield without a state name. That way you could imagine it's not too far away.

A magical kingdom with inexplicable borders

[–] osanna@lemmy.vg 5 points 4 days ago

Yes, but Matt groening confirmed it is Oregon

Have a spring? Have a field?

You have water and space. Put some people on it you have a town in the making.

[–] gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

yeah makes sense actually. sudden realization

[–] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 hours ago

Its so fun how words become new things in different contexts. Like awesome to describe the awe and terror a volcano erupting provoked to how I describe the burger I had last night.

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 36 points 4 days ago (2 children)

TIL people didn't know there are tons of Springfields. Unless you're not from the US, of course, then you obviously get a pass.

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

None around me, because I don't live near an ocean. Got a shitload of Sunnysides, though.

IIRC, the reason The Simpsons is in Springfield was becsuse every state in the US has a city of that name and they didn't want the family to be from any specific state.

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 days ago

Yes. It’s because Matt Groening lived near Springfield, Oregon while Mike Skully was from Springfield, Massachusetts. This gave them the idea that everyone will think it’s “their Springfield” and leaned into the joke of it.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

You're right about the producers not wanting it to be in any specific state, but there is no city or town name that exists in every state. There's only a Springfield in 34 states, but it's one of the most common names.

[–] rodneylives@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Not true, there is no Springfield, Hawaii, for example.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 days ago

And in every Springfield, there's a COBRA base.

Legit, that was lore in the comics

[–] Bubs12@lemmy.cafe 2 points 4 days ago

New Jersey is like fuck it! Why can’t we have more than one?

[–] don_kiedyck@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Springfield, KS is a ghost town.

~~I don't see Springfield, Pennsylvania.~~ ahh, because it's a township? Springfield township

[–] gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

yeah i had to cap it because my screen is not a fucking snake you see,

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 1 points 3 days ago

Sssspringfield

[–] Fondots@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Let's not forget about Springfield Township (Montgomery County, PA)

Or, for that matter, Springfield Township (Bucks County, PA)

EDIT: for good measure because your link didn't play nice with some anti tracking extensions I'm using Springfield Township (Delaware County, PA)

I make no guarantee that there aren't others. I can't be bothered to look.

[–] Bobby_shmurda@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That is hilarious. I only knew of "Springfield" in Delaware County. I put quotes as I've only know it as such, hearing it referred as such from everyone living there.

Seeing three counties that border each other, each have a similarly named Township, i imagine thousands more.

Lol, Pennsylvania has 9 townships named Springfield.. How original.

[–] Uair@autistics.life 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

@Bobby_shmurda @Fondots

NJ has at least three Washington Townships.

[–] Bobby_shmurda@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

Now I wanna see a table ranking of all the repeatedly used city \ village names.
