Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1785 readers
107 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YPTB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

MODERATORS

I submit for your judgement, my ban from a History Photos, after the mod (a favourite around here) loses his cool and breaks almost all the sub rules and the instance general guidelines.

Arguably he also breached instance rule 1 against ableist conduct and use of slurs as the history of the word moron is quite troubled - something I've disagreed with @PugJesus@piefed.social on before.

https://piefed.social/rules

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moron_(psychology)

For clarity I do not support any of the states identified by the US as rogue states. Discussing motives and outcomes does not equal support.

Rules

  1. Be respectful and inclusive.
  2. No harassment, hate speech, or trolling.
  3. Foster a continuous learning environment.
  4. No genocide or atrocity denialism.
  5. Photos MUST be at LEAST 10 years old, and ideally over 20. We appreciate that we are living through events which will become history, but this is ultimately not a comm for news or current affairs, but events which have occurred some time in the past.

Alright.

This is definitely PTB. PJ broke his own rules. You can't do that as a mod, period. Doesn't matter what the provocation is.

Mind you, you were a smug jerk as well (edit: and I mean that both of you were being smug jerks), so the only reason it's PTB is that he crossed the line. I might have temp banned your ass a few exchanges previous at the most. Probably, I would have just reminded you to chill the fuck out and disengaged, but I dunno, I can be a hotheaded asshole sometimes.

If it had been temporary, I'd have gone with an ESH since both of you were slap fighting instead of talking, but that's not what happened.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago

Agreed. OP's comments have that vibe. I would have just not replied to them, even as a mod.

I'm going to weigh in that this is a case of PTB even if, as some others you could have been more graceful. The role of a moderator is primarily to prevent things from spinning out of control like they did here.

That particular mod left his old home instance after realizing it had some problems, and was acting better for a while, but has been returning to many of his old ways. In particular:

  1. He has been getting less and less respectful and inclusive
  2. He has not been open minded, which is required for a learning environment
  3. He has a eurocentric perspective on genocide and atrocity that ignores that even though pre-colonial societies were not perfect, the current state of the world is a very direct result of an attitude that any one society is more advanced/developed than the others they encounter

This is how pj has always been though? And for leaving it didn't seem like it wad from issues as much as pj wanted to own the tankie devs by moving to software done exponentially even worse people

PugJesus

He's a cunt, so there's no surprises here.

[–] therealdries@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So you were banned by pugjesus because they got high off their own supply again.

First time, I take it?

[–] Cypher@aussie.zone 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I’m a repeat customer haha

[–] UniversalMonk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 19 hours ago

So you kinda went in there hoping for drama then. As much as I think PugJesus is a fool, dude, you were baiting.

[–] therealdries@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 21 hours ago

The "power tripping mod" problem here on lemmy is turning out to be even more pervasive, and perhaps more fundamental, than it ever was on reddit.

[–] AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Can't read the screenshots due to being on mobile, but claiming moron is an ableist slur feels like a huge stretch to me.

[–] Cypher@aussie.zone 4 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

For context, until the 1960s, the terms moronidiotcretin, and imbecilewere all genuine, non-offensive terms used, including by psychiatrists, to refer to people with mental/intellectual disabilities and low intelligence. These words were discontinued in that form when concerns arose that they had developed negative meanings, with "retard" and "retarded" replacing them.

Welcome to the euphemism treadmill

[–] AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I'm aware. I've even posted articles on that topic before. But current day usage of those terms generally no longer refers to mental issues, the horse has definitely left the barn on that issue.

[–] Cypher@aussie.zone -1 points 15 hours ago

Uh huh. So how long before you deem retard acceptable?

There are people still alive who were diagnosed with those terms and who undoubtedly had them used as ableist slurs against them.

Once you’re on the treadmill there’s no hopping off

And I’m not perfect. I’ve used moron as an insult occasionally

[–] naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 day ago

Pugjesus is the worst kind of sancitmonius neckbeared power tripping taint sniffing reddit mod

[–] sneezycat@sopuli.xyz 20 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

PTB.
I don't know who's in the right history-wise, and I appreciate pugjesus' posts and explanations.
But in this case it feels to me like it was just an interesting argument until he decided to call you a dipshit and a moron (and then ban you). Smh.

This probably isn't the community for it but as I was banned for 'conspiracy theories' I figure its relevant.

The US has been quite open about its involvement in Libya and there are plenty of sources on this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_involvement_in_the_2011_Libyan_Civil_War

https://www.congress.gov/crs_external_products/IF/PDF/IF11556/IF11556.33.pdf

Over a decade after a 2011 uprising and U.S.-backed military intervention that toppled longtime authoritarian leader Muammar al Gadhafi

Congress has conditionally appropriated funding for transition support, stabilization, security assistance, and humanitarian programs for Libya since 2011

The idea it could be a conspiracy theory that the US backed rebels against Gadhafi is beyond ridiculous, it was public, acknlowedged at all levels of the US government and is a matter of factual record that assistance including military and humanitarian spending. These actions were undertaken largely under the umbrella of a NATO intervention.

Stating the fact that this happened isn't condeming or condoning (though ousting Gadhafi was good, the fallout and subsequent rise of ISIS in the region was horrific) it is literally just the recognition of events as they happened.

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

The start of the revolt was genuine but there is not a single doubt that the US was involved in destroying Libya. France was even more involved, it was france who brought the idea in UN to be involved under pretext of protecting civilians . Still this is a PTB

[–] gnufuu@lemmy.ca -1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Keep the comments in YPTB posts about the moderation action itself, not about the general topic in which the moderation took place.

Thought you might appreciate this quote from this comm's rules since you're so outspoken about following them.

[–] Cypher@aussie.zone 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This probably isn’t the community for it but as I was banned for ‘conspiracy theories’ I figure its relevant.

Right at the top of the post buddy. Going to follow the rules yet?

[–] gnufuu@lemmy.ca -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] Cypher@aussie.zone 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It is relevant to directly refuting the reason for the ban as stated in the mod log.

Got any more bangers there champ?

[–] gnufuu@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 day ago

My bad, I could have sworn your comment was

about the general topic in which the moderation took place

and not

about the moderation action itself

[–] Wren@lemmy.today 16 points 1 day ago

One of the most unhinged, incendiary and often super wrong people on here. They're practically a mascot for bad mods, a leech that clung to the foot of a reddit exodus.

Good on you for trying to bring respectful discussion into their com, but you might as well have been delivering top sirloin to a seagull.

PTB for sure

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

PTB at all times. You did nothing wrong.

[–] gnufuu@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Arguably he also breached instance rule 1 against ableist conduct and use of slurs as the history of the word moron is quite troubled

This you?

The fact that you've been throwing around that very same word makes me think you're simply looking for drama.

[–] Cypher@aussie.zone 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It sure is! Glad you caught that but it’s a little out of context because Pug has previously banned me for using a synonym of moron while he often uses this language in subs he moderates.

Just a call back to another account and ban really.

[–] gnufuu@lemmy.ca -2 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] Cypher@aussie.zone 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah me again, my issue isn’t with the word but Pug’s extremely biased moderation.

Now if you’d weigh in according to sub rules that’d be great

[–] gnufuu@lemmy.ca -2 points 1 day ago

Nah, I'm fine with the initial position of your goalposts.
