Not everyone. We got a Nintendo switch, PS5, Xbox and PC for gaming as I believe it's important that kids while growing up should be exposted to different cultures.

SNES -> PC -> PC -> PS4 -> PS5 -> PC
Bloodborne was too good to miss, and it led me astray

Atari -> NES -> SNES -> PS1 -> PS2 -> PC

Mainstream consoles are walled and we should not cheer on "our" consoles. For the same reason we should not cheer on our nationality.

Im ps2 tho...

PS2 –> Wii –> 3DS –> PC

PC > Consoles.

Linux handheld console > Every other console.

...and PS Vita.

They are the peak of handheld. Then the Steam Deck came along. Now there are quite a number of Linux based or Linux capable handhelds that surpass them.

Then there's the AYN Thor.

They weigh enough that one could consider them not ideal. Some used to be nearly weightless. Only saying this because steamdeck causes me hand fatigue.

Amazing system, but also ouch.

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

... steamdeck causes me hand fatigue.

Really? Huh. Haven't ever had hand fatigue from playing on the Steam Deck. Completely different story when it comes to the Switch 2.

The NDS gave me fatigue when playing games that required the stylus a lot.

Had a GameCube, Xbox, and PS2. Had a Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360. Only ever had an Xbox One, and have so far skipped the current gen, exclusively playing on PC.

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 day ago

Lol, they didn’t make that decision. Their dad did.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

And every single one of them was wrong, no matter which console brand they picked.

When I got my first consoles around 8, it was from my neighbor who wanted to get a ps1, so he sold me his snes and genesis and about a dozen games for each. After that I got every major console (used ofc) though I stopped xbox at the 360 because I always buy used at least a generation behind, and the whatever came after one was already out, and almost entirely backward compatible. Why get xbox one when I could get the whatever came after and get two consoles for the price of the one?

I might get the xbox whatever’s current at some point, but the big companies basically destroyed the used game market with their shenanigans, discless consoles, pushing digital games over everything else and barely even releasing games on disc in the newest generation, and then fucking up the used market further by making everything online, shutting down servers, and revoking licenses for stuff making people realize if they don't have it physically they don't own it, driving up used game prices so they cost as much as new.

At at this point I'm just not really into collecting games anymore. It’s no longer a fun cheap way to get occasional gems among lots of average games (I have like 500 discs, a lot of those games are very meh).

I still game, but I’d never pay for a digital copy that I can’t sell/give away when I don’t want it anymore, because that’s not what gaming is to me. So my current method of aqusition gives exactly the same amount of money to devs and studios as my former method of buying used games, and I feel zero guilt as a result. They weren’t getting my money anyway, the difference is that now nobody does. I do throw indie devs money a lot more often than I would if buying the used disc, but I’m still broke (more broke, in fact) so I can’t afford to do it all the time, much less buy all these games at whatever price they decide they want to get for it.

I've actually changed brand twice.

PSX -> XBox -> 360 -> PS4 -> PS5

Neither of those companies produced consoles when I was 8. But of the those, I only ever owned PlayStations (PS2, PS4). So, Me_irl too I guess?

Edit: Forgot I had a PS Vita too.

we got the 2600 when i was nine (had the pong before that). it was still being played 30 years later. dunno what happened to it after mom died; she also had my old mattel handhelds, tabletop donkey kong and frogger, and a couple others. kinda wish i had them. have only played a couple consoles since (last was probably super mario on snes), but never owned any other than that atari. instead of consoles, i got into the z80, 8086/88, c64, apple for a short time, and then now pc. don't have any of the old computers, they were stolen out of a storage garage years ago.

I was all over the place in this area...

Growing up it was Nes, MegaDrive, 64, PC then xbox.

Once I was financially independent though it's been a cursed obsession...

Famicom, fcds, SNES, GameCube, Wii, wiiu, switch 1 and 2. Not to mention GB, GBC, gba, ds, 3ds and both of the 35th anniversary game and watches.

Psx, PS2, ps3, ps4 and ps5.

Xbox, Xbox 360 and xbone.

Master system and Atari 2600 were picked up at some stage.

Writing it down has highlighted to me that I may qualify for some kind of diagnosis.... Oh dear.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

I’m lucky—I had everything! Every console up to the PS3/Wii/XBox 360. When the PS4 and XBone came out, I didn’t like how underpowered they were and their horrible load times so I quit consoles. I still have all the previous ones, back to my 2600! My SNES got the playtime from like 8-18. The Genesis didn’t have a ton of great games.

Brand loyalty didn’t really even occur to me when I was a kid

I went: NES, Sega Genesis, PSX, and then stuck with PCs from then on and haven’t looked back.

[–] lokalhorst@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

I was a huge PS1 and PS2 fan in my childhood. The PS3 was kind of weird, I was missing couch coop games and the internet stuff wasn't exactly my thing. From there on, it all wenn downhill. Consoles are shit nowadays unfortunately.

Xbox One: “The Worst Generation to Lose”

Basically Microsoft fucked it at an extremely critical time when everything was going away from physical media to internet based distribution

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

I had both until the PS3/XbOne era. (I was also just starting high school when the first Xbox came out so way beyond 8 lol)

Then I had niether and exclusively played on PC until I got a PS5. Only one game I never got to play that I actually still want to from that period: MGS4. Tried emulating it a few times, but it was slow and buggy. Though it wasnt too long ago Konami announced something that made it sound like MGS4 is getting a rerelease or something.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

MGS4 was a really long movie more than it was anything else.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 1 day ago

So was 2 🤷‍♂️
