Isn't stuff like that kinda normal tho? Humans of all types like patterns, and symmetry, and precision. These things are just very pleasing to the eye

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 40 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I'm inclined to believe that too. Then again I would say a lot of "autistic" things aren't abnormal.

[–] InputZero@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

A lot of disorders and syndromes are really just normal things that everyone deals with. They just a lot more than the average person. It's like the nepo beach baby who claims they're depressed because they don't feel happy sometimes. That's not depression, that's boredom, you're bored.

Same thing with autism. Someone can be a fan of trains but realizes that a random person doesn't want to have a conversation about them. It's the scale and scope of the behavior/disorder that defines it. Not merely having that characteristic at all.

Oh yeah i didnt mean it in a disparaging way. I am neurodivergent myself.

Have you ever quilted or lived with a quilter?

A cut of steak is pleasing to the eye... the slaughter house, not so much.

In the same vain, many people who eat meat could not stomach the processing behind it.

Quilters are a different breed.

i feel like the concept of "horse girl" definitely needs re-evaluation with this lens

[–] flubba86@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Horse girl is just the girl equivalent of loving trains.

Can confirm. Before I left home there were horses around and I adored them ... these days I have to make do with a collection of horse figurines, and a couple of horse tattoos.

In a similar vein, my brother has model trains (which I'm also quite fond of).

Half of my ex's could tell you more about serial killers than any detective.

Hey, I only learned everything about horses in primary school (including behavior, breeds, anatomy and feeding...) OUT OF CURIOSITY!

[–] lime@feddit.nu 1 points 2 days ago

It doesn’t blow my mind because it tracks with the way we treat women’s healthcare.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

Because the things I like to do or talk about were normal (ish) for a little girl, I got to have a doctor look at me and tell me at 30 I was on the spectrum.

Fun! Not at all alieninating!

[–] Zexks@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It is normal. What is not normal is having all the content and stimulation available at your fingertips that we have now

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 days ago

I'm just gonna assume you've never quilted or lived with a quilter.

Yeah I don't really buy arguments like this. When quilting was invented there was literally not much else to do, people had rare contact with a small number of other people, and limited means to stimulate themselves or pass the time. What's autistic is still preferring these ornate, elaborate, complex hobbies over all the inane ways people pass the time these days. Most quilters from back in the day probably would have been perfectly happy to sit in Starbucks or walk around the mall or scroll insta or whatever the fuck normal people actually do with their time, they just didn't have the option.

Counted cross-stitch supremacy--adds numbers and counting to the mix

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Aw fuck, i got the autism from my grandma

[–] makeshift0546@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago

Every hobby or need from the past makes me a cool autistic kid 🙄

Lady CONSTANTLY post shit that leaves behind and normalizes the dehumanized and violent humans with this who don't get away with, ' ohhh I'm so autistic, I spent 100 hours in PoE!'
