California should just suspend sending in that much in federal taxes then. Fuck Vance and rest of the ghouls in Congress and the administration.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 19 hours ago

how exactly do they do this? The state governments are not the ones taxed.

[–] morysal@lemmy.world 10 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

At some point the federal government and California are going to need separate diplomats instead of politicians because half the country’s political fights now look like two governments openly challenging each other.

We (Californians) are voting on whether or not to seriously consider succeeding from the United States in 2028.

[–] SilverFlame@lemmy.world 9 points 20 hours ago

Do you think the referendum will secede?

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 20 hours ago

If CA did that, President Kid Rock will send an invasion in 2030.

[–] toomanypancakes@piefed.world 97 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well California should hold all federal taxes then. Including making employers deposit employee taxes into a local fund to be released after the federal government cooperates with funding what it's supposed to and arrests the entire administration.

Calvin & Hobbes reference appreciated.

[–] Bahnd@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

I was thinking it was a Vermin Supreme reference and his mandatory pony based ID system.

Oz said that the administration needs California to clarify $630 million in billing, $500 million in home health services and $200 million in “questionable expenditures” linked to coverage for undocumented immigrants, he claimed. They are not eligible for Medicaid, however.

The move is similar to the one the administration took in February suspending Medicaid payments to Minnesota.

This has nothing to do with “fraud”, and everything to do with Californian and Minnesotan resistance to the DHS and ICE incursions of their cities, and punishing their citizens for daring to vote against Trump. California’s Republican voters are just collateral damage to them:

As of 2024, California had a higher Medicaid enrollment rate than the US overall. Enrollment in the state peaked in 2023 at 38.7%

In California, enrollees are categorized into 5 different categories:

  • Children
  • Pregnant women and parents or caretakers
  • Adults without dependent children
  • People with disabilities (including both adults and children)
  • Seniors (age 65 and over

Californians across party lines overwhelmingly support Medi-Cal. Eighty percent (80%) of Democrats, 75% of Independents, and 62% of Republicans agree that the program should generally stay as it is today.

“Doctor” Oz is no longer just a daytime TV huckster, he’s driving the policy that removes health care from pregnant women, children, and senior citizens. These people are black-hearted, red-eyed evil - “Do what we say, or we’ll take away the taxpayer-funded healthcare you paid for.”

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 18 hours ago

“Doctor” Oz is no longer just a daytime TV huckster

He was fired from Columbia medical by a petition signed by real doctors.

[–] Modern_medicine_isnt@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I wish I didn't have to say this but, duh. Anyone smart enough to know lemmy exists knows all this. (This is not a statement saying you shouldn't say what you said. It is an endorsement of the statement you made)

[–] wuffah@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago

There’s an important difference between knowing something and being able to demonstrate it. It might seem obvious to us, but if we wanted to convince someone who doesn’t agree, we at least have something external to corroborate the claim.

The exercise also strengthens my own knowledge with details I didn’t have before. For example, I had a feeling that there were plenty of CA Republicans that like Medicaid, but now I know roughly how many and that in fact, they were polled specifically about their preference for the program.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 28 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Then California should suspend payment of taxes.

As the state is a huge (largest) contributor it sends out more than it receives anyway

[–] KneeTitts@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

Then California should suspend payment of taxes

if I was cali, I would just walk

[–] nosuchanon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This. Use the collected taxes to actually improve infrastructure and create a CA universal healthcare system. Pour that money into education instead.

And stop infringing on people’s freedoms with stupid environmental bullshit.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Breathable air...bullshit.

Go back to LA smog days.

If you’re gonna compare modern cars and emission systems to cars from 50 years ago that were straight piped and barely had catalytic converter then sure go ahead.

I just don’t happen to agree with police officers harassment of car enthusiasts. But I mean enforcing emission laws that are disproportionally enforced is clearly more important than peoples rights getting abused for bullshit reasons by the government.

How’s that boot fucking taste?

[–] Rusticus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Burning fossil fuels kills more than 250,000 people a year in the US, the majority source being automobiles. Savings lives is a bullshit reason in your world I guess.

[–] nosuchanon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

While I agree that a significant portion of emissions comes from individual car use, The greater majority of air pollution comes from industrial and business uses.

I think the implementation that California has towards oppressive air pollution and vehicle emission laws for citizens while letting corporations pollute as much as they want is the real problem.

I’m not saying that there should be no emission laws, I’m simply pointing out the California police officers have a reputation for targeting citizens as opposed to corporations.

If we’re going to look at total global emissions then something like 40% of carbon emissions come from the shipping industry. So the focus should be on Changing over shipping containers to electric as opposed to fuel oil. Tell me what are the admission standards for international shipping?

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 18 hours ago

If you’re gonna compare modern cars and emission systems to cars from 50 years ago that were straight piped and barely had catalytic converter then sure go ahead.

because of bullshit emissions laws. you think all that was voluntary?

[–] ZeroCool@piefed.ca 50 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

There are California taxpayers and American taxpayers who are being defrauded because California isn’t taking its program seriously

I'm going to go ahead and stamp a big ol' [citation needed] on that claim. What does "California isn't taking its program seriously" even mean? I get that it's deliberately nebulous, but I'm just so tired of the constant stream of baseless claims from these ghouls. If they had any evidence they'd be parading it around on Fox News, but they don't. They never do.

[–] DaleGribble88@programming.dev 37 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Isn't that congress's choice, not the white house?

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 57 points 1 day ago

Hasn't mattered since Trump took office. The entire federal government needs to be replaced. Almost none of them are doing their jobs and nearly all of them are letting this happen.

[–] teawrecks@sopuli.xyz 2 points 20 hours ago

Welcome to the trump administration.

What brings the child rapist and the rest of the Grand Old Pedophiles purpose and their greatest joy is causing the misery of others.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hey, James, if you're so keen on investigating fraud, you should take a look at Kalshi etc. and all the insider betting going on there.

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why would they investigate themselves?

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 4 points 1 day ago

I think you're on to something...

- Hey JD..
- Yes Don?
- So we are again falling short about a billion dollars in this Hormuz thing….
- Say no more…

[–] turdburglar@piefed.social 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

well that seems pretty illegal.

[–] Modern_medicine_isnt@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Oddly, not as obviously as you think. One cornerstone of how the government was set up was that the feds could exert pressure on the states via financial means.
So at least that part fits. Now the question of can the president do this vs congress... well similar situation. Congress has the power of the purse, but the president has the freedom to do just about anything he wants with congress being able to impeach and remove him. Since congress hasn't done that, they basically have given indirect approval to the president to do this. It's clearly a system that did not anticipate the kind of people who are now politicians. It needs to be replaced.

[–] turdburglar@piefed.social 1 points 13 hours ago

as do the politicians. i just can’t with ted cruz and lindsay graham. and that ron johnson… oof

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How about California falling short of federal tax payments? They are one of the biggest payers (if not the biggest) that finances the republican flyover states...

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 21 hours ago

It is THE biggest, yes.

Fourth largest GDP in the entire world.

Over 312 billion dollars in annual contributions.

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

He's not invincible.

Well, if Couchfucker and Dr Quack say there's fraud ...
