House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Sunday said Democrats will not focus on impeaching President Trump if they regain a majority in the lower chamber after midterm elections.

“I’ve made clear from the very beginning that our top priority is going to be to drive down the high cost of living,” the House minority leader added.

The House minority leader has lauded Democrats’ push for redistricting nationwide in an effort to pick up additional House seats and signaled that the party will advocate more for working-class Americans, after Democrats saw losses from the key demographic in the 2024 election.

If Democrats are serious about anything they should be replacing Hakeem Jeffries if they retake the House. If he and Schumer had an ounce of shame they'd have both already resigned.

I think by the next decade, we'll be entering into a 2nd Progressive Era.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago

I hope so, and I think the winds are blowing that way, but there are at least a few in Dem leadership that would rather Republicans win than Progressives. If they conspire with Republicans to end free and fair elections we may be in real trouble.

Unless of course the fascists have completed their takeover and effectively outlawed dissent by then.

Tragically, that's probably much more likely 😮‍💨

Since you don't want to understand why Jeffries is intentionally trying to depress Dem primary turnout and you're doing exactly what he wants...

What is that weird "obligatory" thing you've included?

Edit:

Never mind, it's super old propaganda aimed at dividing the working class along racial lines so we don't unite against the wealthy oligarchs...

Settlers argues that the class system in the United States is built upon the genocide of Native Americans and the enslavement of Africans and that the white working class in the United States constitutes a privileged labor aristocracy that lacks proletarian consciousness. Arguing that the white working class possesses a petit-bourgeois and reformist consciousness, Sakai posits that only the colonized peoples of the United States constitute its proletariat.

The solution is abolishing the class structure, not squabbling over who's where on the bottom of the pecking order.

If we abolish it, it doesn't matter where someone was, because it's gone.

Never mind, it's super old propaganda aimed at dividing the working class along racial lines so we don't unite against the wealthy oligarchs...

I totally disagree with this take.

Settlers isn't written for white people, but it sure is handy. If we look past defensiveness it is a useful analysis of why class consciousness struggles so hard in north america. If people acknowledge the privilege they are better able to understand how things like promises to lower the cost of living is a tool to be swayed into complacency. Once you can understand that you are in a better position to achieve class consciousness and see past how oligarchs use race/origin to divide us.

I get a feeling I should state "acknowledge the privilege" isn't some public declaration/self flagellation. I just mean looking at oneself and understanding how we fit into the world.

It's true, though. You DO incur a cost if living.

Also if dead, at least for a while after the transition. That's paid by others, though.

I love the cynicism but 4 months ago every strategist was like "talk about only the economy, that's all people care about, and you can't lose" and now the Dems are trying that, and people are like "Pfft talk about revenge more," which wasn't part of the strategy. I haven't see the polling on it. But I bet the average American gives a big shit about their bank accounts and relatively little shit about Trump's inevitable escape of consequences and the circus he's constantly spinning. I want the Democrats targeting the big base of potential voters, not courting the angry people on the left at the expense of broader palatability.

Populism is a funny thing, if we're going to try it to counter the populism that got us here, we have to acknowledge not everyone will be satisfied by the plan.

But I am spitballing, I have no idea what they're thinking, nor does anyone in here.

Aka "we can't choose better because it's not perfect" and "how evolution doesn't work".

Jefferies and Schumer can be removed TODAY if you contact your reps and have them replaced (with enough votes of course). We don't need to wait for the primaries.

It would be interesting to see what their proposals for lowering the cost of living are.

[–] BluntRadical@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Probably only the progressive democrats, definitely not the centrist democrats.

Drive down the cost of living

How, exactly?

Are they gonna force landlords to lower rent? Certainly not. Make grocery stores lower the prices? Lol, no. Energy prices? Lmao. Maybe an affordable, good quality, environmentally friendly alternative to the overpriced crap you make in America? Get fucked ya pleb.

You Americans are truly between a rock and a hard place.
