The man admired by many Spaniards as the finest bullfighter ever seen is recovering in hospital after being gored by a bull during his comeback from retirement.

José Antonio Morante, more commonly known by his matador’s moniker Morante de la Puebla, suffered the injury on Sunday, while bullfighting in Seville. Video footage showed him being lifted off his feet as the bull’s horn punctured his buttock, before colleagues drew the animal away from him by distracting it with their capes.

After initially being in a very serious condition with the 10-centimetre wound, which perforated his rectum, Morante is now recovering.

I don't know anyone who doesn't root for the bulls, fuck bullfighting, fuck bullfighters, fuck the running of the bulls too. I hope everyone involved gets lifechanging injuries.

I image this like Gladiator where Maximus is actually the bull being the main character

  1. Mess with the bull.
  2. Get the horns.

Also, while a proctological exam is important at that age, it's probably better to see a trained MD

“It was the most painful goring I have ever suffered in my career,” he told El Mundo newspaper from his hospital bed. “I felt enormous pain and I was very scared because I could tell that the bull had gored me and I thought I was bleeding a lot.”

Perspective switch

I am amazed how one can use these words while being totally oblivious to the feelings of pain and being scared that the animals go through.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago

You're not murdering animals for entertainment if you feel things like empathy or shame.

What do you mean? Torero feels pain and fear, which helps him to see the bull's perspective. Wrong?

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

I must have missed the part here where the torero had a change of heart.

Today he learned being poked by sharp things hurts

In Spain these guys will actually kill the bull in the Arena (hence the name "matador" - literally "killer"), so this is only fair.

PS: Mind you, not that "just" the part of torturing of the bull (the only part done in Portugal) is much better.

I love the photo. That horn looks like it's getting a full tour of that fucker's Spanish colony.

awww. poor guy. Maybe next time he shouldn't have participated in the torture of a live animal.

[–] BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world 9 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

When you kill animals for sport, you can't be upset when the other team shows up.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 8 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

its only fair the animal responds in kind.

I'm glad that my community in Spain doesn't permit this animal abuse anymore.

[–] Undvik@fedia.io 4 points 16 hours ago

Are you in Canarias? Because in Catalonia, where it was banned, the constitutional court reversed the ban as punishment for the independence movement (while leaving the canaries ban standing, clear double standard). So it's sadly not officially banned in Catalonia any more, but of course no corridas actually happen as they'd get no money from the Generalitat.

"...bull in comeback from retirement" Sounds like the comeback was successful :P

(Is there a c/ for ambiguous headlines?)

[–] GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago (5 children)

So soon after a millionaire was stomped into paste by elephants?

I think things are actually getting better.

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

My favorite is still the killer whales capsizing rich people's sailboats. Although that would have been even better if the orcas had eaten the free snacks.

Spaniard here.

Bullfighting is nowadays extremely niche of the extreme right wind retards. No normal perdon liked it, let alone knows the name of that arschloch.

We are happy the bull managed to win a small fight.

[–] Enkrod@feddit.org 37 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Man, I love the EU.

admired by many Spaniards

Sorry but no. Bullfighting is actually very unpopular in Spain. It's a relic of the past that's kept on life support by conservative politics.

Very happy to hear he has been gored by the bull. Couldn't have happened to a worse person. And this is always the reaction of pretty much everyone I know whenever this happens

[–] TheOneAndOnly@lemmy.world 68 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Last line:

A poll taken last year by the BBVA Foundation found 77 per cent of Spaniards found the pastime “unacceptable”.
