The Rules

Posts must be:

  1. Links to news stories from...
  2. ...credible sources, with...
  3. ...their original headlines, that...
  4. ...would make people who see the headline think, “That has got to be a story from The Onion, America’s Finest News Source.”

Please also avoid duplicates.

Comments and post content must abide by the server rules for Lemmy.world and generally abstain from trollish, bigoted, ableist, or otherwise disruptive behavior that makes this community less fun for everyone.

And that’s basically it!

If I was The Onion, I would not have announced this. I would have slowly started slipping normal sane reporting into the site until it was fully converted. I’m guessing those visitors probably haven’t seen truthful news in awhile.

theonion.info has all you need to know.

Such is the InfoWars I envision: An infinite virtual surface teeming with ads. Not just ads, but scams! Not just scams, but lies with no object, free radical misinformation, sentences and images so poorly thought out that they are unhealthy even to view for just a few seconds. The InfoWars of old was only the prototype for the hell I know we can build together: A digital platform where, every day, visitors sacrifice themselves at altars of delusion and misery, their minds fully disintegrating on contact.

😆

If the licensing agreement receives court approval, The Onion plans to turn Infowars into a comedy site satirizing its conspiratorial origins, and comedian Tim Heidecker has been hired as creative director.

This brings me so much joy.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 41 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think Tim is going to do a Great Job.

[–] Soulg@ani.social 14 points 2 days ago

Awesome site.

"This is me alex jones sneaking into the epstein residence dressed as a little girl to watch all my future friends commit crimes."

Watch the Trial of Tim Heidecker and then clips from Alex’s trial and it’s spot on. If the Trial of Tim Heidecker hadn’t came out first, you would have sworn it was a parody of Alex.

If the Trial of Tim Heidecker hadn’t came out first, you would have sworn it was a parody of Alex.

To be honest, I still can't tell the difference.

Probably because those two links are exactly the same. (Happens to the best of us.)

Fixed. Darn phone crashes when I change tabs.

Its free real estate

The Onion will also sell Infowars merchandise and share the proceeds with the Sandy Hook families.

I'm grateful to The Onion for many reasons throughout the recent decades. And it seems I have a new reason to add to the list.

The fact this deal was ever able to be blocked in the first place is indisputable proof that the law has always been on the side of the fascists.

The Onion's parent company, Global Tetrahedron, won a 2024 bankruptcy auction to buy Infowars, but a judge voided those results, saying their was a lack of transparency in the deal.

If the licensing agreement receives court approval, The Onion plans to turn Infowars into a comedy site satirizing its conspiratorial origins, and comedian Tim Heidecker has been hired as creative director.

“I just thought it would be just a beautiful joke if we could take this pretty toxic, negative, destructive force of Infowars and rebrand it as this beautiful place for our creativity,” said Heidecker, one of the creative forces behind “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.

This is quite a paradox. It's a true story, not satire, meaning that it does belong on /c/nottheonion; and I would indeed look at the headline and think "That has got to be a story from The Onion, America's Finest News Source." But it's definitely about the satire newspaper and website The Onion, which is explicitly what this community is not about. It says so in the name!

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 60 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We don't have a community called "quantum superposition of onion", so this will have to do

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

Seems like we both do and don't, which is the best possible outcome I think.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It's about The Onion, not in The Onion.

Ah, new word unlocked.

Alliaceous is an adjective meaning to resemble, smell, or taste like garlic or onions. It often describes plants belonging to the Allium genus, such as leeks, chives, and shallots, which are characterized by their pungent, pungent, and savory scent.

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

They're pungent and pungent!

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Thank you, saved me the trouble of looking it up! There's a word I'll probably never find occasion to use.

Alex Jones has not commented on the Onion’s new plan to take over Infowars.

Heh

[–] nop@lemmy.world 40 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I subscribed (actual money) to the Onion when the original deal went down. Glad I continue to do so, they do good work.

Does this fit for NotTheOnion? It specifically is The Onion. Not complaining or anything, just had the thought.

[–] quips@slrpnk.net 27 points 2 days ago (3 children)

God its onionception. Its both not an onion headline but yet is also an onion headline at the same time.

And it's got layers... like an onion.

[–] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

I guess that means we're done?

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I'm pretty sure this article is a paradox.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

Perhaps they are coming in as a Shallot?

[–] antlion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 2 days ago (17 children)

My apologies for the downvote. The article used their instead of there and it’s quite a terrible website in terms of ads. Not a lot of substance to the article I regret my click.

Hoping they'll do a series on all the times alex jones said god talks to him and tells him what time it is.

[–] Gork@sopuli.xyz 29 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It is fitting for the world's leading satirical news outlet to take control over info wars in their global war on info.

How long do you think it'll take the people who visit the site to realize it's satire now? If ever?

[–] oldwoodenship@lemmus.org 12 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Only if the onion starts turning the frogs gay

I pray to Jah that this really happens.

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 19 points 2 days ago

That’s Mr. Rule to you!

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 9 points 2 days ago (3 children)

license the Infowars website and its associated intellectual property from Gregory Milligan, who was appointed by a bankruptcy court to manage the website, for $1,800 a month

So the money goes to the victims, right?

and Jones could appeal any ruling

nooooooooo!
