Yeah, Mad Man Theory, which dates back to the Nixon Administration. It's debatable whether it worked back then, and it's definitely not going to work against a theocracy.
Also, when it works it doesn't work long. A stable nation that consistently helps its friends is a far better strategy. Especially as you never have to go it alone when actually threatened.

What does he do on sundays that gets him so riled up?
I think Sundays is the day when many of his closest advisers take some or all of the day off, so he's just wandering without the distractions that normally keep him busy.
Spook the market Sunday, spend spend the first half of the week blustering, place Polymarket bets on Thursday, announce the problem is solved and count your profits Friday, golf on Saturday (well, actually every day, but Saturday you don’t have to tweet if you don’t want to).
So that relatively small group of soldiers sitting in boats far from shore without adequate food or supplies are going to crush the much larger and entrenched entire Iranian military now huh. Sounds real scary.
One silver lining to all this is that evidently Trump has learned that its harder to attack a mid sized country halfway around the world --without allies-- in challenging terrain -- than it is to attack some unarmed civilians trying to get to work in portland or minneapolis.

The soldiers won't do a thing, US Navy-Air Force will toss bombers and missiles; they'll do small special ops too, of course.
I don't think they'll ever use the Army-Marines, too much risk.
