I had a pet dog who had to sleep in bed with me. Problem is he'd spread out and dig his claws into my back. There was a period of time when I had two twin beds in my room, and I'd move to the other when he'd start monopolizing the bed. He'd wake up, realize I was gone, and move to the bed I was in.

Of my three guide dogs, my first would hop up on the bed for about 10 minutes and then get off. My guess at the time is she got hot, but she showed similar behavior elsewhere, wanting to check up on me and then leave. My second was a velcro dog. She slept at the end of my bed, and would even hop on the bed if I so much as sat on it to tie my shoes. My current dog has a small social battery that he drains by seeking occasional cuddles and scritches, but never more than a minute or two, then he's off hiding again. The only time he's on the bed is when there are fireworks going off outside, when he's trying his hardest to get under my skin.

We had a pet cat once. Never would sleep with anyone, at least not me, but one night I woke up to him sucking on my arm.

Yep! Don't think I have a choice anymore, I made the mistake of pulling a cat onto my bed to pet him, and now he hops on and I just let him.

Nothing better than a cat purring happily as soon as it hops onto your bed.

I don't see humans doing that, all humans do is get angry at me for being slow. Tf I need you for.

Dogs are great but dogs are also disgusting.

Nobody who rolls in shit is allowed on the furniture.

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Agree. Ours is not allowed on furniture. She has multiple beds all around the house, and a crate with a blanket covering top and 2 short sides (back against the wall) she has some "privacy" in her cave. Very padded/comfortable bed in the crate as well as 2 large blankets that she piles up however she feels fit and makes it her den.

She's allowed nearly everywhere else and gets tons of attention and love so she never feels abandoned.

But yes, they can be very disgusting so we try to mediate that the best we can, blankets are usually washed weekly, beds when they need it.

She's also 60ish pounds and sheds like crazy, so...

My cat let's me into the bed sometimes.

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I have a Queen size bed in my home. The bed belongs to the cat.

I have a Queen size too. I've never understood how they're so good at picking the exact spot that makes the bed the least usable.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 2 points 3 days ago

Surely you meant sometime's

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Cat and yea. He sleeps in one corner. And it gets kinda dirty fast from him always sleeping there but I love him and I don't care.

I sleep on my side. My cat sleeps along my upper arm, her front paws curving over my shoulder, her nose facing towards my face, just so she can keep an eye on me.

I'm currently under a cat and the dog is keeping my feet warm. They do stay above the blankets though and I wash my bedding weekly. The dog also gets a bath every other week but, that's because she's allergic to everything outside.

[–] SelfHigh5@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago

I would die for this dog, of course he can be on my bed.

Yes. Pets’ worlds are typically extremely small. They only experience what you allow them to. For an indoor cat, that’s basically just the inside of your house, and whatever they can see outside the windows. Dogs are only marginally better, because they get walks and time outside. Why would I essentially restrict them to the inside of my house, and then restrict them even further by disallowing them from sleeping where they want?

My cat is sleeping on my knees as I type this in bed. The dogs can also sleep wherever they want; one prefers his crate (the door stays open so he can come and go) and the other usually prefers the couch or his bed. They’ll sometimes curl up on the bed, but it’s usually during the day when my partner and I aren’t already there.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They're cats. How would you stop them?

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 7 points 3 days ago

I do it by shutting the door and being consistent.

It isn't a good night's rest without a fluffy 90 lb old English sheepdog in the middle of the bed - all 4 paws in the air and snoring.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

On the bed?

In the bed

Wiener dogs dig

4 dogs here. 2 little ones and 2 big ones. The biggest sleeps between my wife and I, sometimes even sleeps sideways, taking up most of the bed. The second biggest usually sleeps in the floor. The second smallest usually sleeps next to my legs on the outside of the bed. The smallest sleeps between our pillows.

It's not uncommon for me to struggle to turn over in the middle of the night because I'm sandwiched into the bed.

[–] Aerosol3215@piefed.ca 2 points 3 days ago

Oh, and we had a cat that would jump from my wife to me and back again in the middle of the night. Nothing quite like having a 20 pound cat drop onto you I'm the middle of a dead sleep.

[–] KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 days ago

Our cats are allowed anywhere we allow humans to put their butts. The floor, the bed, the couch, chairs, etc. Tables, counters, and the like are off limits.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Absolutely!

[–] Maestro@fedia.io 5 points 3 days ago

My cats used to sleep on the bed. But one of them has a tendency to go into the hallway and meow loudly at nothing. So, since we had a kid they had to stay downstairs in the living room. I will occasionally "forget" to close the door downstairs though 😄

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Cat: absolutely. Dog: no, dogs stink and roll in poo and other smelly things.

I miss my kitty sleeping on my head.

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Cat yes, dog no. Dogs seem more comfortable with rules, and I don't like them in the bed. So I train them not to and we are both ok with that.

Cats I can't control, but they tuck in easily and don't take up much space, they are kinda relaxing to have in the bed.

Same rules for the couch. So relaxing to have a cat next to me, purring. Dog at feet, or sometimes we get a chair for them, so they can sit up high like us.

[–] Corporal_Punishment@feddit.uk 6 points 3 days ago

Yes. She is a cockapoo and doesnt take up much space. She normally starts the night at the bottom of the bed and usually by about 4am She has crept up into the space between our heads.

I recall reading that being allowed to sleep in bed with their owners (or other dogs) is actually really good for them as they get much better rest/deeper sleep as they feel safer. The significant drops in cortisol can have a positive effect on overall health and lifespan.

It might be bullshit but on the off chance that being allowed to sleep in bed could increase her life expectancy than its worth it.

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 days ago

I married a non cuddler, so if I want the toasty at night, the little dude is my only option. Luckily he loves snuggles.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago

Can't tell my cats anything they are often on my bed whenever they want.

[–] Pissmidget@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

The cat i grew up with would leave a little room on either side of him in the bed. How you were supposed to manage was entirely a 'you' issue.

My grandparents cat preferred her own pillow between their pillows at the head of the bed. She'd also promptly leave her tail in grandpa's face. If he attempted to remedy the situation he'd get a polite, yet firm, hiss in response.

[–] tangible@piefed.social 5 points 3 days ago

No, my bedroom is off limits.

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

I have a hard time sleeping if my cat isn’t at least on the bed with me, but most nights she starts by sleeping on me then makes her way towards my feet later on.

Travel can be tricky to get rest on because she’s spoiled me that way.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 3 days ago

Yes. They snuggle me.

[–] Marshezezz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 days ago

Heck yeah. I have a Pomeranian so I don’t think it would be possible to kick him out of the bed even if I wanted to.

[–] CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

My dog sleeps right in between me and my wife. She likes to be the big spoon and the little spoon.

Yes.

She's a king Charlie spaniel, so I have to share the bed with her and a pair of Sennheiser hd4.50s paired to an iPhone that plays brown noise and an Android that does YouTube. (Can't trust an Android to play 24/7 without a stutter at least once a week, but the iPhone which is otherwise dumb as a box of rocks never fails - the headphones switch devices when one stops playing.)

She has a small fan running at the foot of the bed and most nights will rest her head on the end of the bed metal rails for a nice cool breeze and potentially a redneck CPAP. If she gets cold she'll come to the pillow end, head first under the blanket to pinch my warmth for a short time and then stretch out along the gap between the passenger side pillow and the blankets. I may get kicked in the back now and then.

Perhaps the strangest thing though is she'll happily be in bed for 12 hours or more and not need to want to empty her bladder.

Yes, she is a spoiled Velcro dog and rules our world. The car even has an evaporative cooler, a lithium battery bank and a backup AGM battery in the back seats so she can be with me while I work even on hot days.

The cavalier breed tends to bond so tightly to their owner that they get very stressed after a few hours alone.

Yep. Izzy sleeps next to my pillow. Sometimes I wake up with a handful of furry face. Cats are goofy.

[–] exist@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 days ago

My current dog is not cuddly unfortunately. It is a great day when he comes to lie with me for a few minutes.

[–] wirelesswire@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

I have a dog who weighs ~45 lbs and is a total bed hog. I've tried her in the bed a few times in the 8 years I've had her, but it's always a bad night sleep for me. Not only does she hog the bed, but she wakes me up by getting up and shaking off or by shifting and kicking me.

She is allowed on the couch, though, and I love taking naps with her. I think the main difference is I'm only sleeping for a hour or so, rather than all night.

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 2 points 3 days ago

Of course I do. And I look down on the people who dont. I hate people who lock their dogs in a cage for the night (its fine if the dog wants to go in there, but at least keep the door open. Goddamn prison wardens).

[–] Whelks_chance@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

No. Which means it's only for a few minutes, some mornings. Until I wake up.

[–] zxqwas@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Yes, but everyone involved acknowledges the fact that it's my bed and my pillows. They have the old couch as their bed.

[–] EyIchFragDochNur@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Sometimes my cat comes up for some minutes when I go to bed. But she doesn't sleep there when I do, I guess I move too much.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

We would sleep with the cat at night but at night she's a running nightmare.

Napping during the day? She's allowed in the bedroom then and is all snuggles and purrs. If I don't nap, the bedroom is still open then and she'll sleep in the bed sometimes!

[–] Widdershins@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I have one cat who tucks me in every night.

[–] mp3@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

My dogs weight about 20lbs and doesn't take a lot of space on our king size bed so he sleeps with us.

[–] AskewLord@piefed.social 1 points 3 days ago
[–] CallMeAl@piefed.zip 1 points 3 days ago

My dog is way too big to share the bed with. He has his own bed at the foot of mine. He's very well trained and knows to not even put a paw on the bed. However, being so big, he can easily lean in and give my ear a long loud wet sniffing when I try to sleep in.

Our dog sleeps in the bed. She's tiny, though. Plus she's fluffy and acts as hot water bottle during cold nights.
