The decline was led by youth aged 15 to 24 years old, with a drop of 47,000.

It's like we're dead set on radicalizing our youth. :(

Hopefully we'll get an alternative voice to PP who can talk to young Canadians when the NDP leadership election is done. One that would offer them believable material improvements.

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Its not just about what they offer but getting their voice out there as well. Much as i hate it, they'll have to make short form content like tiktoks or shorts to reach that demographic. Some podcast appearances could help as well.

Jagmeet also had a tik tok presence.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

The presence is necessary but not sufficient.

[–] sbv@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Fingers crossed. But I'm not holding my breath.

Skepticism is super warranted. Skepticism of the mind, optimism of the will!

PPs bad plans, like "tying immigration to housing" whatever that means.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If that were the only thing PP planned, me and my friends would not have spent money on defeating him. More like privatizing the CBC which would put all TV media under corporate ownership. And we know what effects on democracy that has.

Ya I felt like Pierre around 2021, when we were doing mass immigration into a housing crisis and the media turned a blind eye. I'm pretty pessimistic on most Canadian media, Vassy excluded.

I'm hoping for Ashton, I think him being a worker will bring some actual legitimacy to a labour party. Unfortunately we'll probably get Lewis who seems about the same as Singh.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I voted Rob first, Avi second. I think while Avi looks Singh-like at first glance, is very different ideologically and when examined in detail or listened to. But if he's elected leader, he must convince you of that himself.

The youth unemployment rate is so bad. i)Just create a grade 13 to bring up everyone's education level.
ii)Make college free.

It's ok, Boomers still have all the money.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 0 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Gen X has all the money actually.

And they got way richer during COVID.

They’re the only demographic that got wealthier during COVID.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Gen X has all the money actually.

Do we? I hadn't noticed.

And they got way richer during COVID.

Again, that's not this gen-Xer's experience. I (along with a lot of my co-workers) lost our jobs during and shortly after covid.

And ain't nobody hiring "old people", and especially not at anywhere near the income we were making before.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

It's not equally distributed for sure, what we see in the actual data is the avg Gen X household has had continuous economic growth. If you play with the data and break it out even further, the wealthiest Gen Xers are the ones who are mopping up all the growth.

Millenials and Boomers are relatively stagnant, but Boomers are retiring and drawing down on savings. They merge Millenials and Gen Z in this data, which I think is problematic, but whatever.

Edit: if you break it down, it looks like 44+ is the age group benefitting the most -- not sure what in the Simpson's paradox is driving the Gen X numbers so much in the first chart

Many years have gone by since I was in school, but even then, they wanted to and did do away with hands-on trades. My problem is, not everyone can be a stockbroker or a doctor. Today, many trades that are still functioning and will forever be, are still working. Hands-on. Would AI replace a plumber? na...I don't think? However, I do feel sorry for those who are unemployed.

[–] NotSteve_@piefed.ca 4 points 2 days ago

I'm doing my part! Laid off/unemployed since January πŸ₯²

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 20 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Instead of this number, I wish we used something more comprehensive, like total hours worked, average income/wage and labour participation rate.

The current metric only counts those looking for work.

[–] BinzyBoi@piefed.ca 10 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Rooommate of mine works in a theatre. She had her hours cut to a single shift a week because they just hired sixteen new people.

Reductions of hours like that should be criminal, how the hell is she expected to pay rent?

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

My kid has a part time job and is looking for another, but everything she can find wants you to be available for any shift at any time. All while not offering more than part time shifts with no guaranteed hours.

Given the unstable and rapidly changing world we now live in, it will only get worse before it gets better, as if the last 20 years hasn't been difficult enough to navigate. The golden age of the baby boomers is ending and is leaving the world in a complete mess.

[–] sixpaque@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

As I commented about hands-on trades, I forgot to mention that if you live in Ontario, the Department of Transportation is looking for " road inspectors" (DOT). Their duties are to inspect unsafe vehicles on our highways. Now the ad was up only for a short time; however, 'beat down their door and at least find out.'

[–] AndriiZvorygin@helpos.ca 8 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I'm very confused by why it says 84k lost, but then it says 100k full time were lost. then wouldn't the job losses be at least 100k?

[–] RandAlThor@lemmy.ca 10 points 4 days ago

I think they are talking about gross losses in one number, the total is net I believe.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Not if part time jobs increased.

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Turn 1 full time position into 3 part time positions with less pay and benefits

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 1 points 4 days ago

Man, I thought it was just us with these fascist dipshits in charge. We lost 92k. AI then?
