I think this is the most American thing I've ever read.

EU: USA wtf are you doing? THE WORLD IS ON FIRE!!!!! STOP! STOP!!!!! STOP!!!!!! Nobody likes that!! Get all your stuff away from everywhere!!

USA: Oh my bad, how about we come on over there and put our stuff on your food? That’ll make everyone happy right?

EU: FFFFFFF!!!!!!!

I just showed this to my Italian work colleagues.

Ranch dressing on pizza....

Torches are lit, pitchforks are at the ready

And I haven't even explained to them what ranch dressing is yet

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

Here's a mind blow ranch dressing AKA buttermilk dressing is sold more frequently in the EU than the US the US is fascination with ranch has declined over the last 30 years massively.

It's just hidden valley. An American company uses the term ranch so their competitors use the term ranch to compete with them here in the US. Since they're the biggest one pretty much everywhere else and the entire world, it's just called buttermilk dressing.

[–] Lanske@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I don't know how ranch tastes, but i always read "rank".

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's just buttermilk with some herbs. It mostly tastes like buttermilk.

So like a creamy butter sauce.

Hidden valley adds so much extra s*** that it's undetectable underneath it all, which is a big reason why people tend to say they don't like ranch. They specifically don't like hidden valley buttermilk dressing, but normal ass ranch dressing is typically fine.

[–] Lanske@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Thanks for that!

You mean Hollandaise sauce or mayonaise?! 😄

[–] P1k1e@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Half of each

[–] dizzle18@lemmy.zip 60 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Which country will one of these people end up getting murdered? My money’s on France. Someone is going to douse their steak au poivre in bacon flavored ranch, and the reaction won’t be pretty.

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

I mean as long as it's a classic buttermilk dressing aka actual ranch. Then it's fine. Maybe not on steak au poivre. But like fuck man.

Buttermilk goes good with basically everything. It's just kinda an inoffensive dressing.

[–] bufalo1973@piefed.social 2 points 6 days ago

Depends on which country they land first. If it's Spain and the throw that shit on a paella...

[–] Codpiece@feddit.uk 35 points 1 week ago (3 children)

My money is on Italy the moment they try using it as pasta sauce.

[–] dizzle18@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 week ago

If they can even survive past asking why their pizza doesn’t have any cheese on it.

In Europe they don't know what ranch is so Cool Ranch Doritos are called Cool American Doritos...

[–] Soulg@ani.social 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Til ranch is only American

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

It's just buttermilk... Buttermilk is absurdly popular in the EU it literally out sales the US and has for a while like decades.

It's just not called ranch in the EU by basically any company I can find that makes a buttermilk dressing.

The term ranch is most US based and really just used by hidden valley and their competitors to opt the name brand recognition.

Everyone else just calls it buttermilk dressing.

[–] sauerkrautsaul@lemmus.org 12 points 1 week ago

in ireland its called Cool Original

No no, this makes sense. The world's opinion of us is already as low as it can possibly get, this can only help. Not likely but how much worse could it get?

[–] RaoulDook@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

They should bring Eric Andre along, he knows how to Ranch It Up!

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Listen, I love ranch, but you're gonna want to convince the Scots and let them try to convince everyone else. Ranch is amazing on fried food, and by fuck does Scotland fry food.

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I've done that. You just tell them it's buttermilk and they f*** with it hard. You just tell him it's ranch after the fact and they get really pissed at you.

But they won't stop eating it. I've done it twice.

Seriously, people keep thinking that all buttermilk dressing just tastes like hidden valley ranch. When really it's just hidden valley ranch is the disgusting outlier why everyone else's ranch is just normal buttermilk dressing and it's delicious.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Honestly I think hidden valley is fine. It's middle of the road, but I get that it may put off non Americans. The thing with creamy dressings like ranch, Bleu cheese, and Ceasar is that the good shit is really good, the middle of the road is going to have some who hate it even though they love the good shit, but others will still like it even though they agree that the better stuff is better, and a lot of people who'd like even the middle of the road stuff will dislike the lower end versions (like store brand).

I don't even like buttermilk dressing on salad, but anything fried is so much better dipped in it. There's a reason it's always offered alongside yankeeschnitzel here as well as often alongside fries. And yeah it's comparable to an equivalent quality mayonnaise based sauce for fries.

Ngl, I would love a trip to Europe. I'm not the biggest fan of ranch but I'd put ranch on every damn thing they want. Europeans would be side eyeing me like mad. Wouldn't care. Got free trip.

[–] bampop@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

But do you need extra dressing when the whole kitchen staff have already hocked up their chunkiest loogies to hold up their end of the cultural exchange?

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 1 points 6 days ago

If they're anything like me, I think the europeans just wouldn't know wtf you're dousing your meal with

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Free food, traveling across Europe, and all the ranch I can eat? Sign me the fuck up

[–] Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 week ago (5 children)

My unpopular opinion

Ranch is disgusting

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Try normal buttermilk dressing.

The stuff hidden valley makes is kind of a disgrace. They put so much extra s*** in it. It's ridiculous.

[–] Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 days ago

oh yeah, for sure. If im going to serve it, that's what I would do. But I don't like dairy "sauces" or sour cream, mayo, none of that. Dairy dressings gross me out. But I have made it homemade for others in the past.

still gross to me though, nothing will change that lol

[–] PodPerson@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

We make ranch at home to occasionally dip things in, and it’s enjoyable. However, the slimy, sour shit that comes out of a bottle of Hidden Valley Ranch is diagusting.

After having gone out and tried other brands of ranch (hidden valley was my family's goto all my life), I have found that I aftually quite hate hidden valley's.

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

Yep, they put so much extra s*** in it. You can't actually taste the buttermilk.

Trying any normal ass ranch or buttermilk dressing is delicious

[–] Ghostie@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I’ve been to a few places in Europe where I know that if I brought in ranch and put it on the food, I’d be killed.

This new form of American imperialism is shockingly evil.

Another Walmart moment.
