Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them

This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online

I love to gate keep! But it's not going well.
It’s still there so I’d call that a success.
Cooking. Being gigantic means ya boi eats. So why not enjoy what I eat? I never understood the protein shake drinkers.
Some people don't mind bland food or eating the same thing all the time. As someone trying to lose weight, I envy them.
This is me. I like using my morning protein shake as a kind of coffee creamer. Then I don't eat til dinner. Then I eat burritos, which I like. It's a pretty easy way to stay lean
Healthy food doesn't have to bland. One of my favorite things is a spicy red cabbage slaw with lime juice and apple cider vinegar. I'm currently eating carrots with ranch made from Greek yogurt. Denying yourself flavor is not a strategy for long term success.
Boardgaming!
I own a modest company collection, run weekly boardgame nights, and demo boardgames at conventions for a large publisher. It helped me meet a lot of fantastic people. Boardgamers are some of the coolest nerds out there.
I like playing board games.
The problem is I don't enjoy sitting through 25 minute explainations of the rules of board games
For sure, nobody does! The art of the teach is so important.
Being broke
Same. Plenty of free hobbies exist though. Hiking, learning a language, identifying plants (check your local weather service if you can contribute your findings), geocaching, streetcomplete, attending a communal board game night or gardening group. Libraries hold all kind of events for all walks of life.
Some sort of political engagement can also be fun and additionally help find friends. There's cryptoparty to teach about privacy. Some environmental groups host day trips with volunteers to clear or repopulate strips of land. You can ask your library if you can offer a workshop of some skill you possess.
There is honestly so much free stuff that I didn't know about yet a couple of years ago.
Weightlifting, gaming, following politics.

What's the latest in the bedrotting hobbisphere? Any new tips and tricks?
Ooh I got one, did u know u can scroll through Netflix for 15min and never decide on what to watch?
15 minutes?! Those are rookie numbers. If your really interested in the hobby subscribe to Foxtel again (as well as Netflix) and you'll be in the big league.
This works across streaming platforms! Peacock is a reliable one, nothing there is really worth watching, but what if you wanted to watch The Office again?

Also spending days rearranging files into more sophisticated structures, finally noticing that it's becoming horribly convoluted enough to be unmaintainable, and tearing the structure down again.
