If it is publicly-traded, it will be enshittified. This is an ironclad, inviolable law.

[–] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de 25 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I feel like what we're witnessing is just the end of meaningful innovation in the IT field, so now comes the meaningless innovation.

Well, thank goodness Elon Musk took Twitter private, amirite?

[–] humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 21 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Since it’s private, Elon could be content with a steady (adjusted for inflation) annual profit, which would allow him to make decisions that are good for the long-term health of the company.

He just sucks.

If it were public, he wouldn’t even have the option to not suck.

Why the fuck does my browser need to send it the information that its muted or minimized?

[–] hackitfast@lemmy.world 43 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Firefox has plugins to spoof specific tabs as always active.

[–] Astertheprince@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

You should link them so more people can find them easily.

[–] Potatar@lemmy.world 20 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I need everyone to look at what you can do with HTML5 "game engines". You want mouse poisiton? You want to know if the mouse is in on the page or not? Internet speed? Audio card codec?

If a 13 years old using the free version of construct3 can do it, capitalism can do it.

You must be using one of those browsers from an ad company.

Didnt you guys watch that black mirror episode? It was exactly like this. Look away from ads and you get punished.

[–] Dicska@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Fifteen million merits.

If we want to avoid this shit, we need to come up with a free, open source, ad free alternative, for everything you see doing this. The problem is, once it becomes big enough, you'll need at least some money invested to keep it running (server, maintenance, services, etc.). And then guess what generates enough money that scales with usage. I hate this, and I reaaaaally hope there's some other way.

[–] angband@lemmy.world 29 points 5 days ago

This ad can't play because I don't watch twitch.

Reminder that Sony has patented technology to force viewers into saying a certain phrase in order to continue past an advertisement. Sure, it sounds dystopian, but just look at how excited the little consumer is to enthusiastically shout the name of one of his favorite corporations!

[–] moonshadow@slrpnk.net 65 points 6 days ago

Mentioning this without including the verification can story should be illegal

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 22 points 6 days ago

Some patents are a crime against humanity.

Copy/paste of the steps i have posted in a friend group discord.

Block Twitch Ads without pausing stream Will not work in Chrome

In Ublock Origin Dashboard

  1. My filters (tab) --> Add twitch.tv##+js(twitch-videoad)
  2. Select Apply
  3. Settings (tab) --> Scroll to bottom of page
  4. Check I am an advanced user
  5. Select the cog to the right of the text I am an advanced user
  6. At the bottom of the page, locate userResourcesLocation
  7. Change it from unset to https://raw.githubusercontent.com/pixeltris/TwitchAdSolutions/master/vaft/vaft.user.js
    • If there is already a URL: At the end of the existing URL, add a space and then the above link
[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 54 points 6 days ago (2 children)

"Avoid minimizing or muting for a better experience" Wow, this is beyond nuts.

If i was a Twitch user, i'd dump this right now.

"for a better experience" lmao

i hope the IT stock market crashes so hard

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 16 points 6 days ago

The phrase "For a better experience" activates me like a sleeper cell to be highly alert to whatever product it came from and assume it's trying to screw me out of my money, attention, privacy, or all three.

Twitch is a SOCIAL website, you chat with the streamer and they chat back. All these ads do is interrupt the conversation and it’s SICK to me. It ruins the entire experience. I don’t mind the pop up small ads, but the full screen ads with sound just trashed the entire conversation. Always seems to happen when I ask a streamer a question then BAM 6 full screen ads when the streamer starts to answer me. No, I’m not paying for turbo or a sub, I’m f*ing broke right now.

[–] 1rre@discuss.tchncs.de 17 points 6 days ago

Twitch is more of a parasocial website in most cases though, unless you're watching exceptionally small streamers

[–] moonshadow@slrpnk.net 13 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Genuine social connection is not possible on corporate mediated platforms friend, a simulation thereof is bait in their trap and parasocial relationships are manufactured to slip their messaging past your filters. I implore you to go outside, or at least start building connection with strangers in niches like this vs would-be celebrities in what is essentially a slaughterhouse for processing lonely dudes

I dropped them like a bad habit when they first implemented the advertisements. I have never looked back.

Really makes you wonder the addiction people have to watching streams that they aren't immediately leaving the service for good after seeing that.

Use this extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ttv-lol-pro/

Run your own proxy that supports tons of VPNs: https://github.com/qdm12/gluetun

Set the VPN location to a country that doesn't or can't get ads (Costa Rica is a good one since they're in the test region for 2k streaming).

Set the extension to use the proxy.

No more Twitch ads.

Soon enough social apps will use your selfie cam to track your eyes. Ads will only play when your eyes are engaged and pause if you're not looking at the screen. Oh boy.

Same with TVs, the built in camera will see who's watching, and Netflix, etc, will stop streaming when it sees 5 people watching when your account is only set for 4. Either one person leaves the room or you upgrade to continue watching.
