I had almost exactly the same conversation with a coworker last year.
The conservative argument that I've heard is that they believe in lower taxes for everyone, including baby eating billionaires, because they genuinely believe the government is not doing anything of value with tax dollars.

Which then becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy when their side is in charge of the government and does nothing of value.
While also being angry that their check is late
Had recently a conversation with somebody saying that they should not increase the minimum salary, they need to reduce the income tax and those workers will be better.
I had to show how the income tax for minimum salary workers is very low due to how the tax steps work, then they went on a tangent that nobody really is earning minimum salary, they earn a little bit more and showed as example an employee of hers with an above minimum salary and a total tax (income+social security) of 60%. Now I take my payroll, salary several times as of hers, and I have a total tax (income +ss) of 36%, and again with the nature of income tax there should be needed a lot of trickery for me to pay less as a salaried employee. Now he forgets his claims and starts ranting that how can I be happy paying so much...
It's always the same. Tell a lie some people will just trust uncritically. When caught, just move the goal post or change the subject.
I personally believe that there is a sinister cabal of ultra-rich eating babies, I also believe it is both sides.
