Learned a new word today, here we call it "Prison".
So... we can smoke inside again? Is there any other purpose to balconies?
I could get behind this if there was any actual decoration or community-oriented furniture in the hallway.
Maybe some fake plants, a bench/sofa, vending machines, etc. Any kind of reason to spend time in the hallway.
When we start having colonies in inhospitable places in the solar system this is how I imagine housing might look like.
Hopefully s little cozier though

In all seriousness, I believe it's because this complex was made from an office building or other similar commercial structure. They tried to add more classical residential features to make it seem less sterile.
I feel like they somehow made it worse.

I'm guessing this area was outdoor at one point and it's been renovated to be indoor but they only went as far as adding roof and floor, not really dealing with the stuff between.
