Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

ICE officers are paid a bonus every time they detain someone.

There you have it.

[–] Arghblarg@lemmy.ca 36 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yup. This is by no means the first allegation they get paid bounties. It was being said everywhere just prior to the shootings of Mrs. Good and Mr. Pretti last month.

Perverse incentives breed perverse behaviour.

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 44 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ask yourself would you go to Nazi Germany back in the forties? If no, then don't come to Shitler 2.0's version.

[–] Melchior@feddit.org 27 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

*thirties. Forties would be WW2.

[–] Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah, in the middle of forties everybody was trying to go there.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Well, if the analogy continues, by 2045 there is going to be a Chinese dude with too many wristwatches putting a Chinese flag on the Capitol building while other Chinese dudes drive German and French made military trucks rolling about in the ruined DC streets.

[–] UncleArthur@lemmy.world 32 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

We have the World Cup this year and the Olympics in 2028. I can see competitors being detained, let alone ordinary fans. It's all going to kick off and I can't wait to see how the world's media will try to sanewash it.

[–] doleo@lemmy.one 11 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Tbh I dont think they’ll even try to sanewash it anymore. How is it that the rest of the world is even contemplating taking part in these games in the first place? How is it that the emperor got the 2 most famous sporting events to be hosted in his empire in the first place? Nah, we don’t ask questions and just suck up the slop.

[–] Melchior@feddit.org 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The last world cups were in Russia and Qatar. Not like those are better then the Us, just less powerful. Olympia was decent though.

[–] doleo@lemmy.one 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

At the time, were those countries assisting a genocide, enabling peadophiles and kidnapping heads of state? It's scraping the barrel, but tbh I can't think of a worse place than USA.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (5 children)

Yeah, you're right, Russia isn't assisting a genocide right now. I mean, they're conducting their own, so that doesn't count I guess (and that shit started in 2014). Qatar had the World Cup stadiums built with literal slave labour, and we really don't want to talk about the general situation of human rights in these countries (it's bad, really bad), but doesn't matter because they're not the US I guess.

Well, to your second question, the host nations for those games are decided years in advance, I think as much as a decade. It's an unfortunate coincidence.

[–] kokesh@lemmy.world 24 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Why would anyone in the tight state of mind travel to that shit hole?

[–] anyhow2503@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

A lot of people have relatives who live there.

[–] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That doesn't mean they must go there. Better use the money for the ticket to get your relatives out before it's too late.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

"Here, come live with me in my tiny flat. I can sleep in the bathtub."

[–] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

A bathtub might very well be better than whatever Trump's goons are setting up in all those warehouses they are currently renting all over the US...

[–] randombullet@programming.dev 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

And their assets? And their work visa? Language? Cultural differences?

There is hardly any money for common people to take off work to protest let alone to move countries.

[–] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

Just look where the journey leads

Soon nobody will be safe from being abducted into some warehouse concentration camp for arbitrary reasons.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Then they will have to travel the other way, which doesn't have the risk of being detained illegally by ICE.
Or meet up in Canada, if they live close to Canada.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

It doesn't? I think it does have that risk.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 weeks ago

Like that British woman who got murdered by her father in Texas?

[–] MrFinnbean@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

There has latelly been a lot of news of this one british lady who visited her father in Texas.

[–] LordDaveTheKind@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I have a brother (and his group of friends) who decided to go, and they are full into their sunken cost fallacy at the moment. It would be very tough to reason them out.

[–] TotallyNotSpezUpload@startrek.website 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Congratulations, they are massive idiots. It's not like this wasn't forecast for at least two years now.

[–] LordDaveTheKind@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago

I also tried to explain them that if it is a matter of money spent and unrefundable cancellations, I can compensate their costs. No amount of lost money ever can justify the risk they are exposing themselves into.

[–] ximtor@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

I will need to travel there for work next month 🥲

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 22 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (8 children)

Refuse it.
At a very minimum there should be a huge risk compensation for traveling for work to USA right now.
6 weeks detained by ICE is no holiday, the conditions are horrible, and you will more likely than not be denied medical service if you need it.

[–] doleo@lemmy.one 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Exactly. Imagine if a job forced people to travel to Russia for “work”.

[–] ximtor@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Honestly, i don't know if wouldn't feel less worried about going to russia lol. Might be news bias but still.

No, you need anorher job next month

[–] cabillaud@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Refuse it. And don't forget: they will be reading this.

[–] zebidiah@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

Refuse it, I did... I can attend meetings virtually and will be available via teams, but I am not traveling to the US.

[–] EverXIII@lemmy.world 21 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I am sorry for your incident but; sorry to ask: with all this mad circus in the USA why would people still insists in travel there?

[–] FalschgeldFurkan@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I'm guessing many people still think having valid documentation will keep you out of trouble.

It doesn't. They have ridiculously high quotas to meet, and seemingly no consequences for laws broken by them.

There really shouldn't be any more travel to the USA for now. Even North Korea has a warmer welcome for travelers (but don't travel there either)

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Honestly a bunch of people are just totally removed from the news cycle and just have no fucking clue, or even if they do, they just think of it like it's fiction, it would only happen to "other people™".

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 2 weeks ago

its ignorance and apathy, its basically the same with some voters" how does this affect me, i dont think its bad,,,,etc"

[–] EverXIII@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] FalschgeldFurkan@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Have a nice day

You too!

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

ignorance, some canadians are still travelling to DISNEY despite all the stuff that happened the whole year in 2025.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

That's like travelling to Germany to see the Brandenburg gate in 1944

[–] Matombo@feddit.org 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Absolut denial. My parents want to go this year. They just ignore everything.

[–] eyes@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Ugh I've got to go later this year, not looking forward to it.
