Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Sam Battle is a legend. Wonder what kind of crazy shit he's going to bring to the show.

Fuck Eurovision, but besides that this guy is incredible. I highly recommend watching at least a few of his videos. He's musically, mechanically, comedically, and software-ly gifted. From preserving old synths and earlier instruments, to creating Furby instrument abominations and 1000 oscillator synths, to making chiptunes on a c64, this guy is amazing.

That is just awesome. Saw him in a small club in Hamburg last year and can highly recommend his shows - although I have no idea how they are going to translate into bigger crowds.

"‘Quite frankly, we have nothing to lose’: how the UK is going weird for its 2026 Eurovision entry"

"So, quite frankly, we have nothing to lose. And if that means entering a guy who runs a museum for “experimental and obsolete scientific and musical technology” in Ramsgate and whose name makes me die a little bit every time I have to type it out, then so be it. We’re going to lose anyway, so what the hell."

Stuart, you're really pissing me off with your high and mighty "artiste" bullshit. Sam has genuinely good music, with a very creative aesthetic. Just because he doesn't do pop music that hits top 10 for ten weeks straight doesn't mean his work is without merit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irfXSw55DUo&list=PLluPQLh1xzlKkAfB-joSEaccwQBr6OSi1

There's also this in the last paragraph:

The most recent video on Look Mum No Computer’s YouTube channel is a clip from a concert, where he attempts to piece together a Blur song on the fly, all by himself, on a bank of ancient electronic instruments.

The link goes to Feel Good Inc by Gorillaz. The title says Gorillaz too. I mean, sure, Damon Albarn is in both of them, but if he knew that in order to make the Blur connection then it only makes it weirder to mix them up

There's definitely a Song 2 cover and it used to pop up pretty high in the search results - but it's also ancient and this is still lazy journalism.

I don't want to acknowledge eurovision while it still contains israel, but I do quite like him...

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 19 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

actually choosing someone interesting and innovative?

And somehow has a chance of winning due to his capability of merging aesthetics to make something that catches attention?

Wow. The UK is bringing out the big guns for the one time that people are going to be trying to make eurovision be a failure.

Its almost like we're in a simulation and the writers are on strike.

Sam Ryder would have won any other year.

[–] BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk 3 points 1 hour ago

Sam Rider didn't build a Furby organ or buy a 27L tank engine though.

Oh shit, we're doing something cool this year? Assuming the whole event doesn't collapse over Israel

[–] P1nkman@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

I hate Eurovision. My wife loves it, so I've watched with her nearly every year for the past 14 years. Boycotting this year, and it's honestly the first year I've wanted to watch it because of the singers, but fuck Israel and their genocide, so we'll not be watching it.

This guy wails. Good on him
