The first that comes to mind for me is The Breakfast Club and I hope it never does have a sequel or remake

The Princess Bride is another good one

Edit: another one of my favourites is Wall.E, my favourite Pixar movie. There are also several other Pixar movies that don't have sequels or remakes yet

Black Rain(1989)

Great antagonist, moral ambiguity, and culture clash.

Thankfully the Rock's remake seems to have been scrapped (fingers crossed it stays that way), so Big Trouble in Little China (hence my name).

I'd also say The 'Burbs (one of my favorites) but it just got a series.

Collateral. That movie was so ridiculously good.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 13 points 19 hours ago

Master and Commander. Wonderful movie, but opened at the wrong time. Could have been a nice series of movies.

Star Wars sequel trilogy. Hollywood really needs to remake all of them. Interestingly, there are two viable options:

  1. Actually make them good this time. Hire the Andor team to get it right.
  2. Modernize them even further, so much so that the entire franchise finally dies for good. Make GPT write the script if you want to go all the way. Sink then billion dollars into this train wreck. When you run out of money, sell the Star Wars IP to Netflix or whatever. Then Netflix will bury it for good.

Silicon Valley is the sequel.

Judge keeps waffling and there was a title has been kicking around Hollywood for years.

What are you talking about? They never made them.

[–] Mothra@mander.xyz 19 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

The first thing that comes to mind is everything Studio Ghibli. They are mostly great films, and have no sequels or remakes yet and I hope it stays that way.

I'm sure there has to be live action examples but I can't think of any right now.

Inception? I'm always surprised about it getting left alone as it should.

Dark City. And it needs neither.

Napoleon Dynamite

Check out Tapawingo, it's not a sequel but it stars Jon Heder and has the same kinda mood: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14146836/

[–] fizzle@quokk.au 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

God I hope there is never an Interstellar sequel. It could only diminish the original.

[–] sic_semper_tyrannis@lemmy.today 1 points 10 hours ago

I totally agree

For those unaware, the sequel has been filmed and ready to go for years but has been blocked from release by law suits.

Anyone who tries to remake or sequel The Princess Bride will have a special place in hell reserved for them.

[–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 2 points 13 hours ago

Brazil. Considering how weird it is I don’t think it’s in any danger of being remade or getting a sequel.

They never made a sequel to Terminator 2 and, honestly, thank God. 👍

He said he's currently working on District 10

[–] fizzle@quokk.au 6 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I think he was talking about this when 9 was released.

[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 2 points 7 hours ago

True, it's been talked about probably since District 9 came out, but in recent interviews he says there is a partial screenplay written but is just wrapped up in Oats Studios atm

There's a whole bunch of spin-offs, most of them series. Star something.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 8 points 19 hours ago (5 children)

I mean, there are plenty of highly-rated movies that don't have a sequel (and probably that's a good thing).

  • The Shawshank Redemption

  • 12 Angry Men

  • Schindler's List

  • Pulp Fiction

  • Fight Club
