Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.
  • Β

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

I can't even feel superior to everyone when theirs so many arch installers!! I use real arch btw. I thought "I guess I should go to Gentoo" but then wait, CHROMEOS IS A GENTOO INSTALLER!

I feel like we only have two options now

    1. Ascend to BSD-land
    2. Ironically supporting Windows Unironically

edit: I have decided to replace my debian laptop with BSD

My PC is an electro mechanical pinball table from 1971 (Williams Klondike, btw) running Puppy Linux.

You guys are snobs. No, seriously, youre totally elitist. You feel like the unappreciated scholars, so you shit on the people who know less than you.

    [–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

    LFS, Plan9, Inferno…

    There are many options.

    [–] Matriks404@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

    OpenBSD is pretty cool.

    [–] k2r@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

    Never go full BSD!

    [–] udon@lemmy.world 5 points 6 hours ago

Just live program your system from scratch every time you start your computer

    [–] Manifish_Destiny@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

I'm thinking Slackware or maybe make a tails like OS that gives you access to the Usenet instead of the internet?

    [–] Rooty@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

Haiku OS! Backwards compatible with an OS that was abandoned in the early 2000s and was never popular in the first place! Zero ports! Use it for web browsing or something idduno!

I wonder what Terry would have thought of AI assistant coders.

    [–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 1 points 8 hours ago

Yeah I feel that's one of the ultimate things right there. Rolling your own distro and then providing that out to the internet. Oh you use Arch? Or have you tried TitanicX?

    [–] BigBananaDealer@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

go to windows this community will vouch for me

    [–] BaraCoded@literature.cafe 10 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Arch? So weak. I do everything only using the bios.

    [–] TimeSquirrel@kbin.melroy.org 5 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

BIOS? I wired switches directly to the data and address lines of my RAM/CPU and toggle in the machine code directly every time I use my PC.

    [–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 2 points 7 hours ago

You've got it easy. I have to hand wind my core rope memory every time I want to open a new application!

Haiku. It's a reimplementation of BeOS.

Alternatively, you could use ReactOS and make it look as windows-like as possible, and then go and post on Windows support forums with solutions to problems that work for ReactOS but not for actual Windows, and then play dumb while calling them dumb when it doesn't work for them.

    I use arch btw.

    [–] evol@lemmy.today 4 points 16 hours ago

    fuck thats a good idea

    [–] 1995ToyotaCorolla@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

The only place left for you is freeBSD and writing your own tiling window manager

    [–] Techlos@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 10 hours ago

    There is another... 1000002638

(There are dozens of us, I swear)

Just keep a stash of healthy butterflies around, and occasionally get one to flap its wings.

NixOS. And be really annoying about declarative software environments

You could always switch to Slackware and be insufferable about it.

    [–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Hey, I'm perfectly capable of being insufferable without slackware!

    [–] Ghostie@lemmy.zip 2 points 7 hours ago

I mean we are Linux users after all. It’s kind of our bag.

    [–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 15 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Make your own, coward. No distro so niche as one that has half a user because it's hardly usable.

Abandon technology and become a farmer.

    [–] shithawk@lemmy.world 6 points 17 hours ago

This is the actual answer btw

    What about trying Harmony OS?

    [–] irelephant@anarchist.nexus 13 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

    There is two other paths:Β

    • Gnu herd
    • Plan9
    [–] SpikesOtherDog@ani.social 3 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

I have GNU Hurd running on a distributed compute platform of 40 salvaged optiplex 9010 workstations.

    160 cores 320 GB DDR3

It shares space with a gigabyte board stuffed with SAS cards providing NFS shares.

I'm still working on the details, but my Luanti server should be up soon.
