Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

The first Dark Souls PC port is notorious for being borderline unplayable with a mouse and keyboard unless you tweak the settings or use plug ins, most just used controllers for ease of use. With later versions of the game, m&k controls seem to have gotten better. Fast forward to today, most PC versions of modern soulslikes allow for both control configurations while still usually suggesting a controller.

Which do you prefer? Have you tried playing with m&k?

My first times playing ER was mouse and keyboard. I got progressively better but it was incredibly difficult. I thought I just sucked at games, couldn’t get past any enemies that moved fast. And duo bosses? Forget about it.

Then I got an Xbox controller and hooked it to my PC.

That next run-through, I made it from Limgrave to Leyendell in about the time it originally took me to clear Stormveil

M&k?Oh no no no. Only if I had no choice.

Paused all the games I've been juggling to have a crack at the demon souls remake.

So far I'm enjoying the level design a lot, the world tendency is an interesting mechanic, I'm guessing it's like a morality system?

Got to meet ~~the one reborn's~~ ancestor, which proved that the conecept can be nice! But the first boss from the second world is some actual demonic shit, not a fan.

Visually It's polished and pretty, but it's missing the distinctive FS flavor for me, doesn't hit the same. And I'm a little annoyed by the constant out of breath/ panting of the character but, oh, well. Nitpicks.

Funny you should say that it's missing the FS sauce for you considering it's the game to kick-start it all, but I get what you mean.

Yea, world tendency is kind of like a morality system, although it's not really tied to actions you take in the game but rather a result of how often you've died in human form. There's pretty much no upside to having a dark world tendency other than harder enemies and NPC invasions, I think? Maybe better loot, but I doubt it. You pretty much only want to stay in spectre form using that ring you get in 1-1 that let's you have 75% health instead of 50%. Makes it pretty manageable.

What kind of build are you playing? Magic is pretty busted in DeS

[–] GrantUsEyes@lemmy.zip 3 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Oh, I meant it in a visual aesthetic kind of way more than general vibes. the fromsoft engines have a sort of "gritty look" that is missing in the very polished finish of the remake, imo. that's what I was trying to refer to. (ᵔᗜᵔ*)

Ooh I thought it was tied to choices in the npc quests or story beats.

For build I'm doing trusty 'ol quality. XD I'm never comfortable with magic :s sprinkled in it's kinda ok but I've been dipping my toes with the recluse in nightreign and it's by far my worst character. (╥﹏╥)

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 2 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Gotcha! Yea that's actually a major complaint many players bring up when it comes to comparing the remake to the original. It's astonishingly beautifully made from a visual-fidelity POV, but many things have been changed from the original. Some enemies look different, for example.

Honestly, it could be - I'm not sure. But dying is a major component, for sure.

It wasn't my cup of tea either. DeS is quite punishing compared to the "newer" FS games, so many recommend using magic because it's quite strong relatively speaking. Not that I'd imagine you struggling with the difficulty. :)

actually a major complaint.

I'm not surprised! It makes me wanna play the og, eventually.

I'll keep the magic rec in mind. ;) so far it's been ok, but I can be dumb, so we'll se how the playthrough pans out!

I won't be playing soulslike for a while but when i do it's always K&M.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 23 hours ago

You're a special type of gamer to pull that off.

Good question! I ended up enjoying K&M over gamepad for these games. But the experience is just as you mentioned. It often needs some kind of mod or plugin and a bit of tweaking to improve the experience. This was also because I had very bad luck with gamepad longevity until I purchased a Steam Controller (the one everyone hates and I love), but then again some of the SC's best settings IMO mix features from gamepad and K&M setups and therefore require me to configure a game's keybinds anyway.

Now the decision to play with a gamepad or K&M just depends on me wanting to sit ik front of a desktop or on a couch or bed, but since the SC lets me use it's trackpads and motion controls I'm pretty comfortable anyway. More precise and durable than joysticks and easier to clean afterwards. Now I'm aiming for a mouse with a trackpad instead of a scroll wheel for the same reason.

Nioh 3 demo is out....

[–] nouseforaname@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Kbm soulsers are a different breed... lmao. Probably playing Nioh 3 demo, and Code Vein II! And not a soulslike but probably some Returnal... really getting in to that now that I'm making some progress... was playing wrong for a roguelike, once I realized how to better play I finally beat the first boss, Phrike, after about 50 tries.. second boss I was on a tear of a run and beat him on the 2nd try!

But yeah soulslikes... if Nioh 3 isn't on your radar, get on that free to play demo, it's absolutely mindblowingly good. As someone who dabbled in the first two but never beat them, this is pinnacle Nioh, and if the rest of the game follows the demo's quality (no idea why it wouldn't) is a 10/10 game, period.

Code Vein II otoh needs some time to bake... performance is rrrrough and lacking any co-op like the first is a big ding to my friend that introduced me to it and myself... super fun so far, though.

I really enjoyed Ghost of Yotei, and heard people say it was soulslike-ish, so I’m going to give Sekiro another shot.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 23 hours ago

Sekiro is a parrying heavy game. To me it's not souls like, though. The constant bosses were annoying, but after beating Wu Kong, I might give it another shot.

Playing soulslikes with a mouse and keyboard feels.like my arms are disconnected from my body. No Rest For The Wicked just came out and I'm gonna try that

[–] Redacted@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

This and monster hunter are completely unplayable with k&m imo

[–] MissingInteger@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

I started with Bloodborne as my first Souls game and even today I still own most of my Soulslikes on console and so I play almost exclusively on controller.
Also, I find navigating 3D spaces, especially from the 3rd perspective, simply easier and more intuitive with a controller.

I’m going to play Elden Ring. I’m currently cosplaying as a Dragon Priestess and incinerating the higher new game cycles with Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike.

Salt and Sacrifice, and absolutely not.
