Office chairs have always been, and probably will always be, the way to go

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 32 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Yeah, gaming chairs aren't great for being comfy since they are modelled after race seats which are made to make you focus

[–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 58 points 3 days ago (4 children)

It's one step stupider than that. Race seats are not made for helping you focus, they're made to keep you physically in place during high g-force situations.

[–] Carnelian@lemmy.world 36 points 3 days ago

Gamer force?

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago

they're made to help you not fucking snap your neck, hence the massive wings on the sides hugging your head

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 4 points 3 days ago

Then that's even more stupid 😭

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 2 points 2 days ago

They are also designed to be reclined when in use, not upright, which is horrible for working with a computer.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 17 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Race seats are designed to hold you in place in high g corners, and keep you safe in a crash. Don’t know why anyone uses one at their computer.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 days ago

it's like how all shoes had to have huge heels, after stirrups for horses became a thing and thus riders started wearing riding shoes.
The heels aren't useful for walking, they literally only exist to hook onto stirrups, it's insane.

i wish i'd pulled the seats out of my old talon when it got totaled. those seats fit me like a glove. I'd've build my own office chair out of them if i could.

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

They look like most sneakers these days.
Grotesk monstrosities

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

They're great if you're tall, though. I love mine, but I really wish I hadn't done the roller blade wheel upgrade.

[–] emeralddawn45@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Really? I'm not super tall but the headrest on mine is already borderline too low. The optional head pad sits at my neck which isn't ideal. Also are roller blade wheels seriously a thing? Why would anyone want that, how do you move the chair sideways?

[–] moody@lemmings.world 3 points 2 days ago

Rollerblade wheels are great for hardwood floors, so they don't damage them. They also feel nicer to move around on. Plastic casters are just shit in general.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I actually like having the head pad at my neck.

And like each wheel is replaced by a single rollerblade wheel. I have a desk and two work benches in my office, so the thought was that I could roll easily between them.

But what ended up happening is any slight movement means I roll.

Ah yeah I guess if the wheels could still rotate freely that could work in theory, I feel like in practice though it would either roll too easily like you said, or if the wheels were unaligned, get stuck or have difficulty rolling in some directions. I'm picturing like a shopping cart. I also have a thick carpet where my desk is though so it might work better on tile or wood.

[–] dkppunk@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago

I love mine too. It’s great for my back, but I get why others find them uncomfortable.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 21 points 2 days ago

Yup. Gaming chairs are just office chairs with a car seat aesthetic for 8 year olds.

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 8 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I recall in the early dotcom days there were companies who thought every person needed to have a Herman Miller chair. Silly thought but they are comfy.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hush let the companies give low level office workers great ergonomic chairs. I've spent too much time in bad office chairs

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

It doesn't matter. Those companies went out of business about 20 years ago, and the new companies have their own chair policies.

That actually is how it definitely should be. If you're gonna make someone sit in a chair doing pointless work for eight hours, it better be a chair that's less likely to give them lasting damage. Companies that give shitty office chairs should be sued for endangering their workers.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

And? They are great, and cheap second hand.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago

i was lucky enough to end up using saddle chairs for a while, and holy shit they blow anything else out of the water.
You can actually sit straight, rather than either leaning back or forward, it's fucking amazing. Plus they make it trivially easy to stand up and sit down.

My first computer chair once I was living on my own in 96. Oh and it only had 3 legs.

Before I moved out it was a vinyl covered high backed dining room chair I had rescued from the dump when I was 10 or so. My dad and I made a new seat for it from carpet padding and covered it with fake leather.

I loved that chair and the only reason I did not move out with it, is because it did not fit in the back of my VW.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I fucking hate those chairs. Probably made by Tekka

[–] night_petal@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago

I think those chairs are one of the few truly common American experiences.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 13 points 3 days ago

Any chair is a gaming chair if you game while sitting in it.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

People sat on trashcans or kitchen chairs or whatever, new gen needs a special chair to game smh. /s

Jokes aside, I remember watching a video where some pro gamer (Starcraft maybe?) showed off where he learned to play, and it was basically sideways on a crowded credenza in the kitchen.

Gaming will, uh, find a way.

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (4 children)

My first computer chair was a whole ass couch, pulled up to the desk. No armrests sucked.

[–] weariedfae@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

Lol my current computer chair is a reclining loveseat. It has its drawbacks but I mostly love it.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Oh I love couch gaming. I Hdmi into the TV from my desktop and grab a controller

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 2 points 2 days ago

My current computer chair is a couch with armrests.

I had a couch about 2-3 feet away from the desk for casual games and movies, then a desk chair in between the couch and the desk for FPS games that I'd pull out of the way when I was using the couch. I kinda miss that setup even though now I have a separate TV setup. At one point I also used a massive lazyboy as my desk chair but that was terrible for using the mouse, id have to be perched on the edge. It was great for falling asleep while watching movies though.

[–] Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I will not stand idly by while a dragon burns down my hold and sloughters my people!

  • lounges in throne casually.

Yes. And Grandma made you a cushion for it since you were in it so much. and she cares about you.

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

They are probably comfortable but these gaming chairs are butt ugly.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

That computer equipment didn't exist before 2006.

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm shopping for a home office chair I'll also use for gaming and it sucks. Basically no stores carry samples in store anymore and those who do only carry those bucket seat atrocities. I'm ->||<- this close to just getting a big ol' lazboy from a relative or something. And I don't have cash for a Herman Miller or whatever.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Find a used office supply store. Wife got a Herman Miller Aeron for $100.

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Holy crap really? Now I've got some duck duck going to do

[–] Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Follow up, check out used furniture stores in your area. I have this 70's high back, faux leather monstrosity that looks like I'm about to threaten James bond and feels like I'm floating.

[–] AshMan85@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Can confirm

[–] sparkles@piefed.zip 3 points 2 days ago

I like my office chair. I have also been known to sit in a folding chair or kitchen table chair. Can’t stand “gaming chairs”. I sit in those things like a shrimp, and mangle my spine.

[–] agent_nycto@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Shit that's what I use now
