Gee golly, I’m so glad my eyes didn’t have to see the f word, my goodness, that would have been disastrous

SpongeBob cleaning a rancid trash can filled with dirty garbage

Pictured: sanitizing the words "fuck" and "perverted" out of a joke about voyeuristically getting off on watching real, actual birds having sex.

Yes this is a Christian internet.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 45 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Fun facts about the world wide web:

  • It's actually spelled In✞ernet

  • In the song "He's got the whole world in His hands," verse 87 applies to the World Wide Web (thus excluding onion sites).

  • Data packets are acceptable substitutes for communion wafer for robots.

[–] Morphit@feddit.uk 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Do the data packets still transubstantiate into human flesh for the robots to feast upon?

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

Of course! How else would they get a taste for it?

[–] callouscomic@lemmy.zip 79 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I don't understand all this meme censorship nowadays.

Fucking get fucking over your fucking stupid fucking shit.

[–] FudgyMcTubbs@lemmy.world 35 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Engagement bait. Here we are commenting on a lukewarm meme about a topic that most people dont give a flying fuck about.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 15 points 1 week ago

a flying fuck

I see what you did there.

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It’s literally not. It’s censored because it was posted on a Meta platform. You have to censor otherwise it will get taken down.

[–] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Doesn't have to be censored here though. Reposting shitty censored memes from shitty platforms that require censoring is absolutely bait.

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

So you want the person to go out of their way to find an uncensored meme instead of posting what they find? Who the fuck cares? People who complain about censored words on Lemmy are way more annoying than the censored words themselves.

Plus, engagement bait to what purpose? There is no karma, there is no money to be made here, there are no “influencers”.

You are literally getting mad at people for posting content on a platform that desperately needs more content.

[–] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I'm not getting mad, and it doesn't seem like anyone calling the meme out for being censored is mad either. The top comment in this thread used the "fuck" word in an excessive, tongue-in-cheek manner to poke fun at the censored meme, not to express real anger.

The one getting mad seems to be you. We're pointing out that we don't want to see corporate censorship on our corporate-free platform, which seems pretty reasonable. But you're getting mad at people calling out that corporate censorship.

You may be right that it doesn't really matter, and posting these shitty memes does more good than harm for engagement on the platform. But I don't think you can honestly argue that posting uncensored memes, or taking a couple minutes to toss the image in paint and decensor it, is some monumental, unreasonably difficult task that the people who... checks notes spend all day scrolling social media for memes can't possibly take on.

Doubt

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Except commenting on a platform like Lemmy doesn't do anything for the post. Only upvoting does. So self censorship is completely pointless and just straight up fucking dumb.

Edit: The real problem is the amount of people who upvote this bullshit.

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 17 points 1 week ago

People posting images from other platforms here

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 36 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You can say "fuck" on the Internet.

Why is an algorithm successfully modifying human behavior for pre-censorship?

[–] voodooattack@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The overzealous censorship is possibly a feature not a bug. Done deliberately by the OP to ragebait people who find it disagreeable for a free engagement boost.

The meme/trend wouldn’t be so ubiquitous right now if it weren’t so successful at its own self-propagation, because it’s being naturally selected for.

[–] blarghly@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Why would OP want to ragebait on Lemmy? Getting more comments doesnt push the content higher. Getting more downvotes makes the content less visible. In any case, there is no benefit to OP to getting more upvotes or engagement on their post - there are no lemmy influencers, and if there were, no one is paying them. Lemmy is too small for political influence bots or shills to try to infiltrate - it isnt worth their time.

There then remain two possibilities. First, OP is trolling for the sake of trolling. Or second (and what I assume), OP saw this image posted to other social media, thought it was funny, and reposted here. The censorship is an artifact of the image coming from another, more censorious, social media platform.

[–] voodooattack@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Not the OP of this post. The OOP of that screenshot on whatever platform they used. It probably didn’t originate here.

The fact it got here is evidence enough that the propagation strategy is viable, and the fact it won’t spread as effectively here (but it still can if people decide to manually repost/share and spread it to other communities or platforms) does not contradict that.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 9 points 1 week ago

It's not like algorithms for seeing swears are incapable of inferring then, either

[–] Tiger@sh.itjust.works 32 points 1 week ago (6 children)

I knew every comment in this thread was going to be about the self censorship and not the content of the meme. I feel very smart, ask me anything :-)

[–] Sonotsugipaa@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 1 week ago

Anything?

... I'll see myself out

[–] wurstgulasch3000@feddit.org 7 points 1 week ago

How to prevent self censored memes on this platform?

Your intelligence is very attractive. Wanna bang? 😏

[–] obinice@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Stop censoring swear words, this is the internet, we're adults (and children who have their internet time and usage monitored and protected appropriately), not babies.

I didn't even read whatever the post was supposed to be, the censorship jumped out and was so egregiously all over the place.

Whoever made this seems to think we're all weak little babies who can't handle a naughty word. I'm sick of it.

Fuck censorship.

[–] flora_explora@beehaw.org 10 points 1 week ago

I've taken many pictures of copulating insects and I always feel weird doing that. But for identification purposes it's great...

"What if we just use our binoculars to watch flowers bloom?"

"You're not gonna believe this..."

[–] filcuk@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I have never seen birds diddle, and at this point, it seems more likely theyre drones deployed by the government

[–] derry@midwest.social 1 points 1 week ago

I have, get a bird feeder, keep it full, wait until spring. Pretty regular shows after that.

[–] Lupo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago
[–] psud@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago

At least the censorship on this one is anti robot rather than anti people

It even looks a little like a botched underline under the fun words

[–] derry@midwest.social 2 points 1 week ago

Birder here, you don't see it much when you're actively out birding. Around bird feeders is a different story in the spring time. Can't help but seeing it then, no binoculars needed.
