THE POLICE PROBLEM

4490 readers
671 users here now

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

RULES

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.

If you're here to support the police, you're trolling. Please exercise your right to remain silent.

Saying ~~cops~~ ANYONE should be killed lowers the IQ in any conversation. They're about killing people; we're not.

Please don't dox or post calls for harassment, vigilantism, tar & feather attacks, etc.

Please also abide by the instance rules.

It you've been banned but don't know why, check the moderator's log. If you feel you didn't deserve it, hey, I'm new at this and maybe you're right. Send a cordial PM, for a second chance.

I thought your constitution explicitly said this wasn’t okay.

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 87 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It does, but it's also just a piece of paper.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 45 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Like the oaths everyone in the military took. Defend the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. Just mindless hollow drivel fron the dishonourable.

The feckless. The shameful. The dishonored.

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 58 points 2 weeks ago

It also says insurrectionists can’t be President and that all rights not explicitly granted to the government belong to the people. It is no longer worth the recycling value of the paper it is written on.

Remember, conservatives brought us here.

Break all ties with any you know.

Research any company you're intending to spend money with to verify they don't have conservative ties. Google the owner. Search their social media.

Do not aid conservatives in any way, shape, or form. Regardless of whether they are your neighbors or family.

“Google the owner” before intending to spend money with a company?

Didn’t Google donated to the inauguration fund? Isn’t it ironic?

It is almost like we should just boycott all big tech.

Don't want Meta/Google/Twatter/Reddit profiling you and giving your information to the feds? Stop using their services and encourage everyone you know to stop as well.

Until we put our foot down they aren't going to stop.

at this point, when I hear about some prominent figure dying in some tragic accident, the first thing I do is try to find out who they vote for.

for example, that recent helicopter crash on the day of that dude's wedding with his three nieces in the vehicle. that's fucking tragic. no other way about it.

and my first thought is "I bet there's a better chance than not that this guy votes republican, I should check that before I feel bad for him"

I love how fucking amateur and unqualified they are even with all their big scary guns and kit. What, like 7(?) dudes all lined up in a queue directly out from the door? Just pointing their waaaay too-cumbersome-for-raiding long rifles straight up in the air? Nobody remotely covering any windows or other exits?

They look more like fucking trick or treaters than anything. Probably feeling invincible because they know they're there to kidnap a 120lb woman or some shit.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 29 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

That's what is so glaring about this. It's so so obviously just for show. Just to intimidate and posture. They are not seriously concerned about their own safety. They feel 100% safe doing this. They are raiding a house that they are quite certain does not contain any hostiles. If they believed it did, they would be WATCHING FOR THEM and not lined up in an orderly line waiting to get MOWED DOWN BY LITERALLY ANYONE.

Incompetence.

[–] BranBucket@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

As I pointed out in another thread, they act like intimidation is a shield against harm in exactly the same way that schoolyard bullies do. It relies on people's tendency to freeze up and panic when surprised by a violent confrontation to work, and if it doesn't work, things escalate quickly.

The other problem is, those kinds of bullies aren't normally equipped with firearms...

Frighteningly, the incompetence probably won't last. They are getting a hell of a lot of field experience and budget for toys and training.

fuck that human trafficker racist piece of shit

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

He would have been one of the first billionaires adjusted for inflation if he had not of died in his sixties. Garbage greedy human being.

[–] vatlark@lemmy.world 45 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

They still need a warrant signed by a judge... Right?

[–] bluegreenpurplepink@lemmy.world 61 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

And the warrant needs to be specific, not general. The warrant is required to be for a specific place and a specific person or specific thing.

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 42 points 2 weeks ago

They are banking on the fact that you'll be on a bus to SECOT before your charges get dropped for being unconstitutional. By then it doesn't matter.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 29 points 2 weeks ago

Does it fucking look like they do?

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 21 points 2 weeks ago

all they need is for nobody to stop them.

[–] Opisek@piefed.blahaj.zone 41 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

And why exactly do they need an entire assault squad to extract one person?

[–] JayDee@lemmy.sdf.org 36 points 2 weeks ago

US military wisdom: "If you find yourself in a fair fight - you didn't plan your mission properly". So they stack like they're going into a house with 4 generations in it that are all armed.

These guys are the types who couldn't cut it in the military but always wanted to parttake, so of course they're gonna draw from that sphere.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 24 points 2 weeks ago

Because they're doing shit that's likely to get them shot, and there's a bit of safety in numbers.

[–] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 13 points 2 weeks ago

They miss the thrill from shooting civilian Iraqis and Afghans.

Why are they all so pudgy?

Because ICE is hiring all the fat idiots who can't read and don't know any better, but need the money because they can't land a job.

I would not to surprised to see in the not too distant future, small clusters of residents forming compounds in an effort to protect themselves. The compounds will only grow larger the more the people feel threatened. It’s gonna get really fucking weird, and extremely fucking violent.

[–] Cowbee_Admirer@reddthat.com 25 points 2 weeks ago

It's already happening actually, there are news of more and more people joining the Black Panthers in Philadelphia.

Paramilitary would be like a militia outside of direct political control. This is just jackboots. Gestapo in training if you please, not paramilitary.

Patriot front going door to door with guns would be paramilitary.

Cringe title, but good that White people are finding out

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 24 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Not sure what your intent is.

The people getting raided in the video are not white.

This video shows that the 4th amendment has been taken away by fascists.

For reference, this is what people living in the US just had stolen from them.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

[–] Nalivai@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They're referring to the fact, that black people were disproportionate targets of harassment by the US police since it's existence basically, and what you realising is bad and started happening to everyone, was already happening to minorities forever, it's just virtually nobody gave a shit.

Be a shame if the high-flow water sprinklers came on automatically and got them all wet with freezing water.
