Before you say it: I do use Adblock on my computer but sometimes YouTube updates their site to make those not work, and sometimes I browse on my phone which doesn’t have Adblock

I think UBlock Origin should be awarded a Nobel prize, btw. Also, this reminds me of that Black Mirror episode, where you pay for everything by watching ads, the screens are your apartment walls, and when you close your eyes to the ads, the screen detects it and starts a deafening alarm. This is the future we're headed for if we don't start paying for content again, now

[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 35 points 2 days ago (3 children)

15 million merits. That was a good episode. Always made me wonder what the outside world looked like to force people to ride a stationary bike all day for power generation.

[–] homes@piefed.world 33 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Just AI data centers everywhere, sucking up all that power and generating the ads in a never-ending oroboros of suckitude.

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Close, "million merit man"

In my headcanon the bikes were to keep the humans healthy. For the pleasure of their Simon Cowell leaders

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 28 points 2 days ago

I was about to say. I haven't seen a YouTube ad in a decade between uBlock and Vanced. The updates are immediate.

Laughs in uBlock Origins.

Laughs in YouTube Revanced.

[–] MeatPilot@sh.itjust.works 47 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Trying to focus on my second screen with mature gay porn playing on it instead.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 10 points 2 days ago

Mature porn: All parties discuss contraception, STI protection, and consent before playtime begins

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 40 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Firefox + uBlock Origin on both desktop and phone = no ads for many years. Default settings on both, no extra work.

[–] synapse1278@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Add SonsorBlock to that and it's just perfect

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

How does one get extensions on mobile? I went into Firefox and couldn’t see any extension section in the settings.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's directly under the hamburger menu button.

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Couldn’t find it, I’m on iOS.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Apple doesn't allow you browser choice. It's not actually Firefox in that context. It's webkit with a different skin.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Actually, you CAN have adblock on Apple. Kagi's browser, Orion, has the option for extensions like Ublock Origin.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I said you cannot chose any other browser engine

[–] boogiebored@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Thank you! Struggled with only Brave as an option which I would rather not use.

For anyone else, you do not need a Kagi account, just change the default search provider in the settings.

[–] manastorm@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

iOS is different because all browsers are basically Safari but with a different skin. You can install Firefox but the version with the more privacy built in called Firefox Focus. It installs an extension called Firefox Focus. It will block ads in Safari and Firefox.

You need to enable it under settings > apps > safari > extensions.

Damn, wish I knew this while I was stuck on iOS. I hated Safari and refused to use it so I just lived with ads until I started using NextDNS

[–] TisI@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Even though I use newpipe on my phone, the very few times I've tried using the browser I got bombarded with ads even though I use Firefox with ublock origin. I always thought I needed to change my settings.

[–] winkerjadams@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Firefox mobile + unlock origin works for me

But I use grayjay usually anyway

[–] abigscaryhobo@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Honestly it's really concerning the number of hyper sexualized ads I've seen. There are still plenty of other ads, but the fact that those "I'm an AI with no filter" or ads that are just straight up animated porn with the camera pointed slightly off screen is concerning.

Sex sells, whatever, but there's some of these ads that I can almost guarantee are being shown to children that should normally be in a sex shop behind a curtain, but here they are being shoved into a childs phone.

[–] Tuxman@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

The classic red band movie trailer between two clips of Paw Patrol…… I keep an eye on what my kids watch in YouTube, but I can’t imagine the amount of traumatized toddlers who got hit by some jump-scare filled gorefest trailers in the past years

[–] vga@sopuli.xyz 11 points 2 days ago

Youtube has ads?

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago (2 children)

No criticism, just curious: why no ad block for the phone?

[–] tatterdemalion@programming.dev 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

All I know is YouTube has more advanced ad delivery methods than DNS blocklists can filter, so you need client-level blocking. This only works if you use browser plugins or 3rd party client apps. YouTube's first party app will always have ads.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, this is just my understanding.

It sounds like you have a level of understanding beyond me. I just have have browser ad blocking.

I don’t know how, my phone is old-ish and almost out of storage space, and I’d like to replace it with a new phone when I can decide on what suits my needs and I can splurge the money on it

Edit: also, most of the time I can just refresh the page on my phone and the pre-video ad on YouTube goes away. This doesn’t work for mid-video ads, which I just got in the middle of a song on YouTube 🙃

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

That makes sense. Firefox has some good extensions, if you just want it browser-based on your phone, and f-droid has some whole-phone options. Just FYI in case you're able to take advantage of one now or at some point in the future.

Edit: Also, does your phone have an SD card slot? If so, that can be an inexpensive way to boost storage and get more life out of your phone.

[–] BarrelAgedBoredom@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If you're on android, revanced is pretty easy to get up and running, it takes the place of the YouTube app you already have installed so no worries about your limited storage space either

[–] s@piefed.world 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

I’m on an iPhone SE right now. Android with Revanced/~~Graphite~~ Graphene was one option I was considering since I’m kind of sick of Apple (all my previous devices were Apple brand gifts), but I don’t know how well Android functions to store and play music files like Apple does. I’d also like a good quality camera, but I don’t need one that is absurdly high quality.

On my phone, I actually play YouTube on the web browser rather than in the app because that allows me to refresh the page and bypass the pre-video ad.

I appreciate everyone’s advice and tech knowhow.

[–] BarrelAgedBoredom@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If you're looking to switch to graphene, you're limited to the google pixel line, which isn't a bad thing imo. Older models can be had for cheap, and they have good specs.

I'm on a pixel 6 right now and it's served me well. I'd recommend buying a 7 and up though, as the 6 is nearing the end of its support (I think graphene will support it for a few more years but I'd double check that before buying one). But a standard pixel 7 can be had for ~$150usd so not a bad call. The pixel 9 and 10 have AI chips in them so if that's a deal breaker for you, you're limited to the 7 and 8 (both still good options). And if you do move to graphene it kinda nullifies the whole AI chip thing anyway.

The default media player on pixels are kinda ass, however. They work fine, but the UI is janky. But there are plenty of media player apps available both on the playstore and through alternatives like f-droid. You can also find cracked versions of most "premium" apps pretty easily online. So if you find a media player you like, but it has ads or some other garbage, you should be able to find a cracked version with little hassle.

And completely unrelated to switching phones, if you're able to add a private DNS into your wifi settings like I can do on my pixel, you can add base.dns.mullvad.net to the private DNS box and it'll take care of 99% of ads (can't speak for youtube specifically) on your phone

[–] Hond@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

All Pixel phones with Tensor SOCs have "AI" Chips. So even the Pixel 6 and 7 come with a NPU.

[–] BarrelAgedBoredom@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

Ah ok, I must've bought the marketing haha. I remember their whole schtick with the 9 and 10 was the "brand new AI chips" for "better performance and privacy"

I get these weird ones that have AI generated sounding audio of women talking about their husband’s premature ejaculation and his one weird trick! No idea what it was (other than whatever gas station boner pill shit they’re selling), I skip before then.

Freetube on desktop, Newpipe on mobile. I only use a web browser for youtube if Freetube/Newpipe is having issues.

[–] possumparty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 3 days ago

youtube revanced or newpipe. there's options for those who believe.

[–] Demdaru@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

Recently watched random vid and creator said he's gotta be careful because, drums...youtube added a strike to video for adult content.

The only adult content in said video was youtube ad xD

[–] LemmyFeed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Do you have ad personalization turned off? I have a theory that when you have ad personalization turned off YouTube will serve you the worst ads in hopes of driving you to turning on ad personalization.

[–] forkDestroyer@infosec.pub 1 points 1 day ago

Yes, I've gotten nonstop animated AI sex/noncon ads since turning off personalization.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

This is what we get for turning personalized ads off. At this point I may as well just setup pi-hole and adblock the router itself.

[–] Katana314@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

The silliest ones I’ve seen now are ads for mobile games that put censor stickers over the “parts” of fully clothed women. (Yes, even in the game, they’re fully clothed)
