I mean, it’s funny but I only count two “layers.”

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 52 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Beard is also the term for the woman you marry to avoid being known as a couch fucker

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 45 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Ya, that’s the second layer.

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 50 points 6 days ago (3 children)

First - Vance is obviously (apparently) trading his wife out for Kirk's widow

Second - "trading for a younger model" is classic shitty midlife crisis behavior

Third - he's trading an Indian wife for a white widow in an effort to increase his political clout

Fourth - the beard thing

There's interplays between the layers too. It's a really well crafted joke, you can keep splitting the layers in multiple ways, this joke isn't an onion, it's a carefully crafted pastry

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 26 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Those are more ‘points’ than jokes.

[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 days ago

Don’t be so shallow!

[–] prettybunnys@piefed.social 2 points 6 days ago

Some might call them the layers of the joke

[–] butwhyishischinabook@piefed.social 22 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Right, but a lot of those aren't layers of the joke, they're just unrelated aspects of the joke. It's funny, but layer 1 = beards getting grey as they get older, layer 2 = he's gay and his beard is more white now. All the other things you mentioned are just additional strands of spaghetti sticking to the wall.

This has big:

"[mediocre post].

Let that sink in."

energy.

Yeah, because when you explain the joke it's not funny... It's how jokes work

I tried to preserve whatever humor is left to be had, not actually be funny. The joke was far funnier than it could ever be deconstructed as

That's just kind of a lame observation really. Unless you believe that her parents purposely named her that, with the knowledge that she would marry someone with two K's in his name to fulfill the prophecy or some shit

[–] nostrauxendar@lemmy.world 35 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

There's two layers here. It's a normal double entendre. That's basically just a regular joke. It's a fine joke, I'm not saying it's a bad joke, it's just not some labyrinthine, multi-layered, super complex joke that you have to unpick piece by piece.

He's just calling Vance gay with a pun.

The two "layers" are the pun on beards getting whiter.

The KKK thing is just a separate observation.

That would be a short skyscraper.

Enjoying soft things? Gay as fuck. A real man would fuck boulders.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Closest human equivalent would be someone like The Rock. If you can bend a Rock-like bodybuilder over, you're certainly not gay.

[–] Tartas1995@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 6 days ago

I guess the "jokes" include

  • They call him old
  • they call erika a racist
[–] TheOakTree@lemmy.zip 15 points 5 days ago

JD Vance:

"anyone who attacks my wife, whether their name is Jen Psaki or Nick Fuentes, can eat shit. That’s my official policy as Vice President of the United States. And my attitude towards anybody, again, who is calling for judging people based on their ethnic heritage, whether they’re Jewish or white or anything else, it's disgusting. We shouldn't be doing it."

Also JD Vance:

"It is totally reasonable and acceptable for American citizens to look at their next door neighbors and say, I want to live next to people who I have something in common with"

"Maybe it's a stupid, racist joke as you said, maybe it's not. I haven't seen it. I'm not going to comment on the specifics of the joke," "But I think that we have to stop getting so offended at every little thing in the United States of America. I'm just — I'm so over it."

Not that they care about the hypocrisy at all. But why are you so offended about it, Mr VP?

[–] e8CArkcAuLE@piefed.social 30 points 6 days ago

still less layers than her makeup

[–] abbotsbury@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

haha the joke is that he is gay, which is a bad thing because otherwise it wouldn't be an insult. i am very smart

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I don't get this perspective. Obviously being gay is a "bad thing" in these contexts because the person in question is vocally homophobic. The insult isn't being gay, the insult is being a hypocrite.

[–] abbotsbury@lemmy.world 0 points 5 days ago

The insult isn’t being gay, the insult is being a hypocrite.

Do you actually know if he is gay, and therefore a hypocrite? Or are you just calling him gay because it would be funny?

Either way, the insult is still being gay. They wouldn't call his wife a beard if it wasn't a bad thing. Maybe you use homophobia even against a target you think is valid. I mean, if he is such a bad guy, then surely his actions are enough to use against him and not make up random grade school nonsense? Even if he was a gay hypocrite, that's irrelevant to why he's bad.

All of that is on top of the fact that by calling every homophobe gay, you are blaming homophobia on gay people.
