Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Two giveaways and what feels like 3 years packed into a single one later, we're wrapping up this year and moving closer to the holidays. Lots of love and happy holidays to anyone who celebrates!

I'm on winter break, and I intend to play some soulslikes in the next two weeks. Might finish up Lies of P DLC and installed Sekiro on my PC for my, probably, 10th playthrough or so. Let's see if I'll get to it or if I'll keep binging Disco Elysium lol.

Not really a question about a game specifically but more so for the early adopters: Do you feel some sort of pride or accomplishment knowing that you started out when the series was still in its infancy? Think you started with OG Demon's Souls or Dark Souls 1. Do you like where the series went with later installments, do you feel like the games have lost their roots? Very curious to hear your thoughts!

Happy holidays to you as well, Druid! Thank you for keeping this comm running, may the comming year be of further growth and success for you!

I'm down with a cold and have been feeling awful.this past few days but I managed to collect the dlc golden records and finally complete my trophy case for Lies of P!/still need to do the final dlc chapter and beat arlecchino again, though. I'm considering using the summon this this time.

Was also playing nightreign , it's fun but it gives me a weird anxiety sometimes playing with others. I don't like having to lead the team at all XD kind of got a hang of the map and how you are supposed to be "routing" but don't like the responsibility of making the chioces . Being led has been a mixed bag so I just have to get over that.

Leveling enough solo is hard, I struggle to get to or past level 12-13 , and more fustrating when you fuck up on the final boss.

An unanswered lore question that I'd like to know... From Elden Ring

Anything about Melina, really. beyond confirmation that she's Marika's daughter we got nothing more on her in the dlc. Which was really disappointing. Where does she fit in the family timeline? Why is there not record of her being aknowledged by the public as Marika's offspring? Was she sort of hidden? How/when did she lose her body? Etc etc.

Not really relevant in terms of lore since we know the important stuff but, more on Messmer's life pre vanishment... More pre shattering family dynamic stuff im general, I live for that sort of stuff. :V

Silksong is kicking my ass, so I might give it a break and switch to Another Crabs Treasure. Ive been letting the little guy tackle that one first but its about time I give it a go.

If you want to beat Sekiro: parry parry parry and parry some more. You really need to nail those. Mikiri counters are a must, and landing an ichimonji can be devastating. What really tripped me up was unblockable attacks: try jumping them instead of dodging. Coming off Dark Souls 1-3 jumping in combat was never an option so it took way to long to realize its needed in Sekiro.

I'm in the know - I've platinumed the game on PS5 :D Played for around an hour yesterday and beat Gyoubu. Let's see how fast the rest of the run will be.

I'll try a base-power run with the Bell activated. Will probably take some time to get used to parry timings again, and I felt a little devastated that I died to tutorial Genichiro but whatever :D I'll get used to it again

Not sure what I'll be playing this weekend as plans are, naturally, all over the place with Christmas

Still, I want to say a thank you to v4ld1z both for doing so much to keep this community alive and more specifically for running those giveaways! I was too ill to take part but it's lovely to see such generosity

Any plans for after Christmas?

Thank you so much! Means a lot to me - trying my best :) ✨

I'm definitely eyeing up Sekiro while it's in the steam sale! A little present to myself

Hey everyone, new to the community as well as being new to Lemmy (well my account is new at least, I've been lurking for a while). I just wrapped up my first NG+ playthrough of Elden Ring and decided to fire up my Dark Souls 1 save that I was stuck at Sen's Fortress on and hadn't touched in a year. To make things short, I made it through the Fortress, got hung up on the Anor Londo archers, got past them and just got done beating Ornstein and Smough on my third or fourth try, so I'm feeling pretty good right now!

Don't really have a question, just happy to be here.

Welcome and thanks for being here :) Enjoy your playthrough

Looking to play blasmphemous, since I won it in the recent giveaway, thank you btw :).

I wonder if games like silksong count as a soulslike, since they technically have just as much in common with demon souls as, like, sekiro

Enjoy!

As GrantUsEyes mentioned, the have enough in common to be worth a discussion here. Lemmy is so small and niche communities are so few and far between, lumping some together to have a shared space to talk about them seems like a good move. If someone disagrees, they can move somewhere else lol

[–] GrantUsEyes@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

We count them as soulslikes here, for the purpose of discussion. ;)

I'm playing Code Vein. The souls influence is apparent, and I'm also seeing things that make me think it influenced other souls games in return. The class system and customizability is a great. You can switch your class at any time and with experience memorize traits and use them in other classes. Pretty good for an anime game.

I have for the moment given up on Nightreign. I defeated Tricephalos; I did it not by being good or careful planning, but lucking into Siluria's Treespear, I played badly and still won with ease. The overall gameplay loop doesn’t appeal to me (at the moment).

I have now started a second RL1 playthrough of Elden Ring. I’m gonna goof around a bit, upgrade some weapons I haven’t used and see what works for me.

I’m not an early adopter, I started with Bloodborne when the GOYT Edition was on sale for 20€ and then years later thought: wait that was neat and binge played DS1, DS2 and DS3. Now from the perspective of Elden Ring I really like where the series got to. Great combat, awesome build variety, fantastic world. ER is my favorite all around FS title (I like the worldbuilding/vibe of Bloodborne still the best).

To the question in the title (unanswered question): Lorewise: in Elden Ring: who or what the fuck is the Mother of the Gravebird's? It's referenced as an Outer God in multiple item descriptions, but never directly described. Come to that WTF is an Outer God, are they gods outside of the Lands Between or Gods displaced by the Elden Ring (maybe even prior to the Erdtree). Some of the Gravebird descriptions seem to allude to that.

Similar questions about Mergo in Bloodborne, who seems to be Yharnams Child. Are they still an entity or did they die in childbirth? They should still exist in some form since Mensis made contact and gruesomely died through that, but what kind of entity are they? Are they a a classical Old One, unlike us in one of the endings? So they are not a next step in human evolution, even though they are born to a human?

Sorry for the semi coherent lore speculation. To be clear these are unanswered questions, but I like them being unanswered. For me this adds to the worldbuilding and general gameplay experience.

Does Stellar Blade count as a souls like?

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Sure :) How do you like it thus far?

[–] CookieOfFortune@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

It’s not bad but pretty short and I heard they ran out of money.

It’s basically a parry game which I’m not the biggest fan of since it forces you into a single play style. The first boss took the longest to figure out the parry timings and since I started playing on Hard it was a lot less forgiving and you have a lot fewer tools in the beginning.

By the third boss I was getting the hang of things.
