Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Two giveaways and what feels like 3 years packed into a single one later, we're wrapping up this year and moving closer to the holidays. Lots of love and happy holidays to anyone who celebrates!

I'm on winter break, and I intend to play some soulslikes in the next two weeks. Might finish up Lies of P DLC and installed Sekiro on my PC for my, probably, 10th playthrough or so. Let's see if I'll get to it or if I'll keep binging Disco Elysium lol.

Not really a question about a game specifically but more so for the early adopters: Do you feel some sort of pride or accomplishment knowing that you started out when the series was still in its infancy? Think you started with OG Demon's Souls or Dark Souls 1. Do you like where the series went with later installments, do you feel like the games have lost their roots? Very curious to hear your thoughts!

I have for the moment given up on Nightreign. I defeated Tricephalos; I did it not by being good or careful planning, but lucking into Siluria's Treespear, I played badly and still won with ease. The overall gameplay loop doesn’t appeal to me (at the moment).

I have now started a second RL1 playthrough of Elden Ring. I’m gonna goof around a bit, upgrade some weapons I haven’t used and see what works for me.

I’m not an early adopter, I started with Bloodborne when the GOYT Edition was on sale for 20€ and then years later thought: wait that was neat and binge played DS1, DS2 and DS3. Now from the perspective of Elden Ring I really like where the series got to. Great combat, awesome build variety, fantastic world. ER is my favorite all around FS title (I like the worldbuilding/vibe of Bloodborne still the best).

To the question in the title (unanswered question): Lorewise: in Elden Ring: who or what the fuck is the Mother of the Gravebird's? It's referenced as an Outer God in multiple item descriptions, but never directly described. Come to that WTF is an Outer God, are they gods outside of the Lands Between or Gods displaced by the Elden Ring (maybe even prior to the Erdtree). Some of the Gravebird descriptions seem to allude to that.

Similar questions about Mergo in Bloodborne, who seems to be Yharnams Child. Are they still an entity or did they die in childbirth? They should still exist in some form since Mensis made contact and gruesomely died through that, but what kind of entity are they? Are they a a classical Old One, unlike us in one of the endings? So they are not a next step in human evolution, even though they are born to a human?

Sorry for the semi coherent lore speculation. To be clear these are unanswered questions, but I like them being unanswered. For me this adds to the worldbuilding and general gameplay experience.
