What a bullshit misleading and intentionally inflamatory title. The city council wants to give everyone in city goverment a raise, namely themselves. Mamdani would just be one of many to get the raise if it were passed. He has nothing to do with asking for, advocating for it, or even any sign currently that he would approve it as mayor. And even if he did agree to it, 100k is not a massive amount of money in NYC, and the city council getting a 16% raise for the first time in 10 years after record breaking inflation isn't crazy either. This title is intentionally phrased to imply corruption on Mandani's part when the actual story has barely anything to do with him.

This made me think about how the Swedish left party does things, if you are a member of the left party and hold an elected position, you are only allowed to earn X SEK, if the held position grants you a higher income, anything above X goes to the party.

I'm sure they think so. Its not just an increase for Mamdani, it is for all of City Council. Their last pay increase was 2016 according to the article.

This of course is not a vacuum though, and I'm sure the rest of New York's average workers have gotten the hard end of a stick for the last decade as well.

I'm sure that most NYC workers have seen a $100k raise over the last 9 years so this all seems above board.

To be fair... that's just Mamdani's... it's a lot less for the regular council members. Not sure how exactly it's structured since Mamdani's increase would definitely be more than 16%.

A proposal filed this week by Councilwoman Nantasha Williams, a Queens Democrat, would boost council members’ annual pay by 16% from $148,500 to $172,500, the New York Post reported.
If approved, the proposed pay hike would also apply to the new mayor, public advocate, comptroller and borough presidents. It would raise Mamdani's pay to nearly $350,000 from the current $258,000 with benefits.

It looks to me a bit more like establishment Dems trying to lay a trap for a Democratic Socialist taking office. He approves it and seemingly immediately does the opposite of part of his election platform, improving affordability for average New Yorkers. Or he doesn't and there's immediate friction with basically every member of the council board that he needs to actually accomplish anything.

Yep, even the article itself basically implies that it's sabotage:

Mamdani would be required to sign the bill — and face criticism from voters — or veto it, creating early friction with councilors whose votes he'll need to advance his legislative agenda.

He could maybe take it and donate the money, but people are so low information they wouldn't find out.

Like Trump does with his presidential salary?

[–] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago

Lol, I think ive gotten like 2 or 3 raises since 2016. So give them like $3.00 like the rest of us and call it a day. That would be $6240 extra a year.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Normal jobs give like 3% raises per year. This is not that.

[–] RustyEarthfire@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

This is almost precisely that. It's 1% more than 3% per year over 10 years for mayor, and half that for the council members.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Ah. Well I stand corrected. Thanks.

Sign the bill to ingratiate yourself with the councilors. Then, each quarter publically and loudly donate 25k USD to programs that are being un- or under-funded by the council. Win-win.

Especially if this will convince the council to raise the NYC minimum wage to a living wage.
