(sigh) Why not just make our own? I can't stand the fact that we have the capability to do these things, but choose to give our money to other countries instead of investing in our own manufacturing industries. It all counts towards "military spending", so why not spend it here?

Saabs offering includes manufacturing it in Canada. It is complicated technology and you might get humans educated in this field so you could make your own next time.

Because making a fighter jet is a more than a decade long undertaking with existing military industrial design, manufacturing, and test infrastructure.

Making one from scratch without the existing IP and infrastructure is an even larger and more expensive task.

It takes the cost (out-my-ass example) from 30 million per jet with a 3 year lead time, to 150 million per jet with a 15 year lead time with an unproven, likely worse, aircraft. And if they are trying to protect themselves from close neighbors' current trajectory turning hostile, they probably don't have 15 years.

Canada's response: "Ha, we'll see about that. Such an estimate suggests you have no idea how dysfunctional and inept our government really is. It will take us at least until 2050 to even finalize our procurement plan. At least. 3 years, you guys are adorable."

This is Swedes, after all. Sweden started development on its system in the 1500s and has had plenty of time inveloping and complicating the system since. Heck, I've tried to get through the zoning process for 4 years now...

But I digress, there are those saying we will be able to fast pace building new nuclear as well, so clearly there are some severely delusional people here as well...
