Well, it is a headline designed to catch the total idiots. Those who, if they had learned Arabic numerals in school, would actually be able to hold a job.

I can come up with XVII reasons why that's not a good idea.

OK now hold it? These violent conquers want to infiltrate the USA. That doesn't mean we can't have a sit down? Should I blow you first or you give me $$$$ after?

Wait. This isn't the Onion?

Lol! Wut?

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 12 points 16 hours ago

It's fucking Newsweek lmao

[–] vpol@feddit.uk 38 points 20 hours ago

Imagine having to explain it to Americans.

[–] KelvarCherry@lemmy.blahaj.zone 28 points 19 hours ago

I saw a meme about this on Lemmy and figured it was satirical. Good to know USAmericans are as stupid as ever.

"BREAKING: Zohran Mamdani is expected to require ALL New York Elementary school students to learn Arabic numerals," one post on X from member of the West Virginia House of Delegates Derrick Evans read. Evans was also as part of the January 6 attack on the Capitol. The post has over 300,000 views as of Thursday morning.

D'oh!

I had a lousy impression of the US school system, but I never realized it was this bad...

True Americans use native numerals

[–] GazpachoManRandy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 17 hours ago

Freedom Symbols. "native" and "numerals" don't fly here piggy

Someone posted this on Twitter and the responses, like every single one I saw, were fucking depressing.

Although it is Twitter, which is now mostly a haven for bots, nazis, propagandists, and Nazi bot propagandists so I shouldn’t be surprised.

I can’t help but feel like this is also just a large portion of Americans and how they feel though.

I sure hope so. This is a much needed improvement.

[–] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

um... it's no improvement... it is in fact no change at all...

[–] 01011@monero.town 6 points 18 hours ago

This is hilarious.

I'm kinda glad that certain people are completely flipping out over this.

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

This fucking article is way too long. It should start with, "he isn't." state the facts, then end. Fuck this idiotic shit.

[–] nocturne@slrpnk.net 27 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

The Facts
Arabic numerals are simply the digits 0 through 9—the standard number symbols used in math, banking, street signs, phone numbers, government forms, and every classroom in the United States.

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago

So, like, 9 11.

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 19 hours ago

Yes. I read the whole thing. It's too long and filled with extra shit.

[–] Seleni@lemmy.world 6 points 18 hours ago

It’s called humor. You might want to try it sometime.

[–] snausagesinablanket@lemmy.world 6 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

A new Home maker class featuring falafel and hummus as side dishes is now mandatory to graduate High school.

[–] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 6 points 17 hours ago

I unironically support that.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 0 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

If I worked at Newsweek and this was published by the organization I worked for I might kill myself. I mean I'd seriously have to consider it.
