As the world emerged from pandemic shutdowns in early 2021, a supply chain shock left a lasting imprint on the cost of owning a car in the U.S., spilling out first through prices of used and then new cars and on to replacement parts and finally to loan costs and vehicle insurance rates.

That sustained inflation in the auto industry - vehicle and parts prices are 20% higher than before the pandemic; insurance more than 60% - put a persistent prop under consumer inflation overall, which President Donald Trump may risk reinforcing with 25% tariffs on imported vehicles.

President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” is fast approaching, and stock markets from Wall Street to Wellington, New Zealand, are falling Monday in advance of it.

In New York, the S&P 500 was down 0.4% following one of its worst losses of the past couple of years on Friday. It’s on track to finish the first three months of the year with a loss of 5.5%, which could make this its worst quarter in nearly three years.

Germany has said it "will not give in" and that Europe must "respond firmly" as US President Donald Trump targets imported cars and car parts with a 25% tax in his latest tariffs.

Other major world economies have vowed to retaliate, with France's president branding the move "a waste of time" and "incoherent", Canada calling it a "direct attack", and China accusing Washington of violating international trade rules.

Carmaker stocks from Japan to Germany dipped. In the US, General Motors dropped 7%, while Ford fell more than 2%.

Trump has threatened to impose "far larger" tariffs if Europe works with Canada to do what he describes as "economic harm" to the US

Republican President Donald Trump said on Sunday he was not joking about seeking a third presidential term, which is barred by the U.S. Constitution, but that it was too early to think about doing so.

Trump, who took office on January 20 for his second, non-consecutive White House term, has made vague allusions to seeking a third one but addressed it directly on Sunday in a telephone interview with NBC News.

"No, I'm not joking. I’m not joking," Trump said, but "it is far too early to think about it." "There are, there are methods which you could do it, as you know," he said. He declined to elaborate on any specific methods.

U.S. presidents are limited to two four-year terms, consecutive or not, according to the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

A lawyer for The Associated Press asked a federal judge Thursday to reinstate the agency’s access to the White House press pool and other official events, saying the Trump administration’s ban is a fundamental attack on freedom of speech and should be overturned. The government insisted there was no evidence that AP had been harmed irreparably.

“AP has now spent 44 days in the penalty box,” said Charles Tobin, speaking on behalf of the news agency.

The AP and the new administration are at odds over the White House’s removal of AP reporters and photographers from the small group of journalists who follow the president in the pool and other events. Last month, AP sued White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and two other administration officials, demanding reinstatement.

The White House retaliated against the news outlet last month for not following President Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
