That's just how they did things on Krypton.

If you're going to replace the trunks, there still needs to be something red there. The contrast makes the suit visually pop.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Perhaps a nice stylish codpiece to make it more "realistic"!

[–] winkledinkle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 hours ago

I was thinking more like spiderman with a cape and no mask.

It’s part of the look. It’s like getting rid of Batman’s ears because they’re “silly”.

If you think the red over the tights look silly, you’re not the right person to be making a superman movie

[–] Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 18 hours ago

It's better to wear them on the outside, they stay cleaner that way

i prefer no Trunks with hopeful vibe. please see Superman Rebirth for what i think is basically a perfect outfit.

[–] nexguy@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago

But you gotta show off your superman underoos

[–] TheMinions@lemmy.dbzer0.com 167 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Thankfully 2025 did a lot of things right, like bringing back the underpants.

[–] jorymo@lemmy.world 1 points 22 minutes ago

If I remember correctly, the actor actually insisted on it, with the idea being that Superman would want to look more like a performer to put people's minds at ease

They aren't underwear. They are trunks, and they are based on strongmen costumes of the early 1900's.

And yes I am very happy to see them return as well because that is very much a part of Superman's look. Because he is the ultimate strongman.

Came here to say this very thing. I enjoyed the new one too, more than the ones with Cavill. Had some heart and a little humor.

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Rachel Brosnahan is the best Lois

[–] Nusm@peachpie.theatl.social 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

She’s good, but I’m an old school Margot Kidder fan.

[–] Wolf314159@startrek.website 2 points 21 hours ago

I felt like Rachel Brosnahan's performance as Lois Lane was either inspired by or an homage to Margot Kidder. They both seem to effortlessly balance smart, funny, feminine, and powerful in an apparently effortless way. Both have maad rizz, no cap.

2025 YOU'RE JUST AS BEAUTIFUL AS THE DAY I LOST YOU

The old-timey comicbook superheroes were modelled on sideshow strongmen, who bent iron rods with their bare hands and such, and all tended to wear capes and tight costumes with shorts on the outside.

[–] blarghly@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Interesting! Also, anyone interested can see an example here

[–] Jumbie@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

This is badass. Thank you for the link.

Exactly this, came here to explain it and found someone did it already. Thank you!

Worst Superman outfit. His outfit is not a costume, it’s his native clothing. It shouldn’t look like body armor. He doesn’t even need body armor.

[–] pulsey@feddit.org 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago

So then it makes sense, they gave him armor in case he needed to leave three Solar system.

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 4 points 1 day ago

It's his native clothing in the new superman. It was made by Martha by some cloth she found in the spaceship, because it was really durable. If you like spandex vetter than cool looking "armor" that's okay.

[–] trslim@pawb.social 9 points 1 day ago

While I typically dont mind most heroes having a costume that doubles as advanced armor or the like, such as Spidey or Batman (Tho i like when Spidey has more makeshift stuff,) I do prefer the more corny, fun look for Superman. As much as I like Absolute Superman, I do like his hopeful colorful look the most.

Look, it's easy to mess up when you have x-ray vision.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Counterpoint: 2014 is wearing a thong. Look at those high straps.

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 38 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Are you sure?

I feel like the progression implies that he stopped wearing it.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

I'm still just trying to understand why you need a belt to hold up underwear. And, not just a belt, but some real shiny metal shit.

I have to assume there's a "Young Superman" story where he's repeatedly pants'd by his adversary and swears it'll never happen again.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 36 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Give him a break. He’s not from around here.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Everybody dresses like that in... checks notes... Wichita.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So this is planet Houston.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

That's no moon, its a petrochemicals transit hub.

[–] KazuyaDarklight@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Emperor has no cloths situation. No one wanted to criticize the godlike alien beings fashion sense to his face.

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Man Of Steel had the dumbest outfit. Made it dark just for the sake of making everything dark.

[–] Jumbie@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] BryceBassitt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean... thats an objective fact though

[–] Jumbie@lemmy.zip -2 points 1 day ago

Your opinion is fascinating.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

The 2014 one looks the most dystopia' evil goon like, somehow.

[–] Famko@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Kind of the point, since the Snyder films were trying to portray a "realistic" Superman (whatever that means), which gave him a sort of cognitive dissonance in how little he cared about actually saving human lives, despite saying otherwise.

[–] moakley@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

... Is that Dean Cain?

[–] YetAnotherNerd@sopuli.xyz 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I like the explanation Gunn used, which was basically that it reminds him just how goofy it is, and that helps keep him grounded as a human.

Also he wants to be someone a lost kid would feel safe asking for directions. He doesn't want to look like he's better than anyone

[–] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Don't understand, he is a Superman it is us doing it wrong.

[–] spip@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I'm too hung up on this depicting George Reeves eight years before even Kirk Alyn had the role.

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

We are talking about USians after all.
