Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Sure, some aspects of the game have been changed from the original. But overall, it's still an amazing game and mostly faithful to the original. It's been exposed to loads of new people who didn't have a PS3 to play the game on, it's probably one of the best-looking games from a visual standpoint on PS5 etc.

The only gripe I have with the game is that it's, once again, stuck on a platform that probably won't be releasing its clutches from it anytime soon. Maybe a PC port is in the works, but I doubt it.

Apart from that, it's still awesome though, right?

It's great to have a modern version of it to play. But they really missed the mark with the aesthetics, imo. It has a very different feel to the original and they arbitrarily changed a lot of details in designs that have meaningful impact on the lore and worldbuilding.

This video that talks about it is probably a little overly-pedantic in some ways but I agree with most of what they say. I didn't notice all of the specific stuff he mentions here, but I definitely noticed the different feel and atmosphere to the game compared to the original:

I think some of the "cosmetic" changes hide the original artistic intent in a way that I don't like.

Like, for example, there's a statue of the old king, I believe it's behind a locked door in the first world. In the original, it depicts the old king as an anime hero, complete with improbable hair and proportions. Nobody could look at it and think "That's what the old king looked like," and indeed when you find him he doesn't look like that at all, he looks like a regular guy.

In the remake, the statue looks like an idealized but realistic depiction of a hero-king. You might look at it and think, "That must be what he looked like in his prime!" But that was not the original point—the original art made sure you knew that even at the height of his power, he was commissioning ridiculously exaggerated statues that looked nothing like him.

This. I, ahem, found a way to play the original, and it was good. If I saw the remake was available on PC I would gladly buy it.

From what I've seen of the remake it looks great. Maybe because I'm new I don't have nostalgia to get upset about due to the changes.

Why ahem? If you own an early model ps3 and a copy of the game using rpcs3 to play it is honestly a better experience overall.

That being said, it sucks that the fucking dragon boss got broken completely when the game server got taken down, and they never pushed an update to fix it.

I never played the original and enjoyed it! That alone makes it worth it for me

Strictly a cosmetic gripe, but they ruined the look of the chainmail armor set.
