In the linked article this one references it says that target is in 10 years. But also Canada hasn't had a very good track record of hitting the NATO spending targets.
I also imagine Carney by probability is long gone then.

Will also point out the Liberals is suppose to table the next budget in Nov.4.
Carney will not survive the next election. The Cons were set to win until anti-Trump sentiment swayed us to Carney's "elbows up" talk.
But he put those elbows down real fast.
If I'm reading these numbers correctly, that proposed $150 billion would be roughly 33% of last year's estimated total federal government spending. More like 50% of what they were spending before the current era of massive deficits.
Not all Canadians will be worse off as a result. Some are shareholders of the giant American defence contractors.
If it makes is less dependant on the asshole to our south, great.
Don't get your hopes up. McGinty was on CBC two days ago talking about deepening integration with the US in intelligence, security, and defense. He said he thought Canada's cooperation should remain "unshaken" despite everything that has happened.
This is the same rubbish that is published in Europe and elsewhere. The most obvious issue with this article is that it doesn't even mention the rising threats by countries like Russia and China (Russia is spending around 8-10% of its GPD, or 40% of its public budget, for military. Numbers for China are hard to guess as the official data is not very reliable).
You can't publish such an opinion without even mentioning the rising threats.

Canada has also been threatened to be annexed by its neighbour with a particularly notorious military. Even if its just dementia riddled ramblings, Canada should be becoming more defense independent.
Exactly. We do need more defense spending but it should be a domestic drone industry and a civil defense program, to have us ready to fight off any adventurism from our fascist neighbours and protect the population from climate change catastrophes.

I don’t get the point of these stupid articles. Canada needs to spend a lot more on military. A lot more. The only question is whether tagging it to GDP is enough or we need to do more.
We just need to be smarter about how we spend it. Canada has a huge territory with a small population, so efficiency is key.
