A clarinet player was arrested after playing her instrument to the tune of the “Ghostbusters” theme song outside of a Portland ICE facility, which has recently become a site of daily clashes between federal agents and demonstrators.

This is lawlessness. No procedure, no rules, no guidelines, no restraint, no empathy, no accountability. Their violence will only escalate. America, you need to start standing up to this administration. No more sitting on the sidelines of politics. The footsteps are heading your way now.

Since the 80's USA has been a society mostly driven by sociopathy, with Republican policies being decidedly and uncompromising sociopathic. So it's not surprising that there are a lot of sociopaths in USA, who are willing to disregard all decency and all norms to trample on those they consider to be below them or against them.

I just read an article stating that Americans are lining up for a job with ICE, and they consider it an "adventure"!!!
Absolutely zero empathy.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's what largely unregulated capitalism and a culture that exalts greed about all else will do to a people. We have literally brainwashed our entire populace into being sociopaths because it made a profit. And we are surprised that there were consequences.

[–] karashta@piefed.social 15 points 1 month ago

"It's just business."

A small statement used to wipe away any atrocity they can imagine. And people think this is somehow right and good.

Capitalism creates sociopaths by creating incentives to be that type of person, you're so right.

I play a mean Recorder I'm about to give my local ICE facility a spirited solo attempt at the star spangled banner.

I have not played a instrument since 5th grade.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I bet "Ice Ice Baby" would be sufficiently annoying on a recorder to prove a point.

[–] Sculptor9157@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Don't put them Under Pressure to do that.

I'd like to point out that putting that into practice is probably much less effort and drama than people might imagine. Most likely somebody already started organizing in one way or another, so you just need to join. And most strategies probably won't involve taking up arms or throwing yourselves against the walls of the palace in large numbers.

Arrested for, and while doing, nothing illegal.

Just remember, if one person has no rights, we all have no rights.

[–] AbouBenAdhem@lemmy.world 92 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

First they came for the woodwinds, and I said nothing because I play in strings.

Edit: It’s a silly joke, but I do think instruments in an orchestra is a good metaphor for the importance of diversity to society.

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 month ago

Lmao I commented something similar before I saw this, way better than what I wrote

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 66 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The USA got some very special freedom, but at least their guns will protect them from overreaching state actors.

[–] lowleekun@ani.social 37 points 1 month ago (4 children)

While it is of course frightening as fuck i really laugh that the U.S. shows what everybody knows. All these weapons are for show and a false sense of security. And of course daily shootings. Fighting oppression? Never.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

There's a cost-benefit calculation to be done. If you're the only armed dissident, it's basically suicide by cop. There's a critical mass necessary to mount an offensive.

Also, a good chunk of the 2A zealots are cool with what's happening. They don't feel oppressed.

The ones being oppressed are the ones who generally didn't like the weapons. I know, I was one of them.

[–] lowleekun@ani.social 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I kind of understand that it feels bad to own weapons when you oppose them. I doubt fascism will lay down peacefully but i wish you guys luck.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Thanks. To be fair, aside from the pacifism if you look at my other interests and hobbies I should be a gun guy, so it's been a begrudgingly pleasant transition.

[–] lowleekun@ani.social 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I believe many leftists will use the time it is still possible to get a gun. I know i would even though i hate that shit. As german i don't really have that option, so i really don't look forward to our own Gestapo being errected in 4 years from now (neo-nazis are about to take power).

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

Sport shooting looks like it could be a valid workaround, plus actually sport shooting is great training. Things are bad here but I can't say I envy Germany right now.

[–] RecursiveParadox@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fight the AfD my internet person! I'm fighting the PVV here. We can still win.

See, the problem here is you're lumping all of the US in one group, while conveniently ignoring that half of this group is against the use of firearms and is for gun control, and the people who have wet dreams about mowing down "the gays" are the biggest owners of said guns.

[–] lowleekun@ani.social 2 points 1 month ago

No no. There are the two groups or even many more arguably. But whether you like or own arms or not there are armed goons kidnapping people from the streets in broad daylight no one is shooting these goons while the maian argument for weapons is being able to resist goverment....

Everyone here is joking about this, but it's not funny at all.

[–] aGlassDarkly@piefed.zip 37 points 1 month ago (1 children)

My understanding is that humor is a very common coping mechanism — in the face of an abuse of power this absurd, I imagine it’s sometimes all someone has the strength for.

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 29 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Nah, I don't think that's quite right, it's not like anybody's ignoring how thoroughly evil these fuckers are, we can just also appreciate that they're little bitch idiots to a comical degree who get intimidated by fuckin band kids

Like, to put it another way, US troops in world war 2 constantly made fun of Nazis while also shooting at them and such. They're not mutually exclusive trains of thought, if anything they reinforce each other.

[–] aGlassDarkly@piefed.zip 7 points 1 month ago

That does sound pretty likely.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I'm not against dark humor. I just find this specific news to be extremely disconcerting and pressing.

Seems like there are people who don't grasp how bad this is.

[–] individual@toast.ooo 38 points 1 month ago

what's cooler than being cool?

ghost busters on clarinet.

what's ice cold?

Arresting the clarinetist.

[–] Zoldyck@lemmy.world 36 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Arresting musicians is very Taliban

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 24 points 1 month ago

They probably felt threatened. Those poor little souls. Attacked with a tactical assault instrument.

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 24 points 1 month ago (1 children)

She was probably playing it menacingly /s

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 15 points 1 month ago

Opposite. Happy bouncy tune while immigrant detention drama unfolds. Emasculating to those goons.

Nazis hate Ghostbusters.

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

First they take the clarinetist. Then when they run out of those, it's the brass instrumentalists.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And I said nothing because I played the timpani. By the time they made it all the way back to me there was no-one left to help me anymore.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago

That's how you got stuck with timpani in the first place.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

Clarinets have reeds and they can be sharp enough to cut someone up in a heated frenzy. Be careful out there ICE! /s

[–] LemUser@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

I could understand if it was a bagpipe player but the licorice stick?

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago
