And stores wonder why I don't want to give them my phone number, email address, birthday, or any other information not strictly necessary for the transaction...

At this point I just assume my personal details are out in the wild no matter what.
Same. After Yahoo mail got breached a few times I gave up worrying about it.
I just get more spam in the end, which is annoying. My gmail inbox is a spam magnet. Non e-commerce serious stuff goes elsewhere.
A few years ago Canadian tire fired all their employees in IT and outsourced to Indian companies
And now they are reducing their staff further to outsource to India even more
If you're a Canadian and you shop at Canadian tire, you're basically betraying the fabric of our society
How about putting the onus on crappy politicians that allow all this to happen... I literally cannot buy anything to maintain or repair my house anymore, the only "Canadian" option is Home Hardware which is extra expensive, does not sell lumber (none of the ones in driving distance from me) and in any case, 90% of what they sell is American brands manufactured in China...
There is literally no choice left
There's choice, people just don't want to give up convenience.
You can get everything you need from local places.
Want patio stones? Go to the manufacturer that the big boxes buy from. Want lumber? Head down to the lumber yard. It's not much easier, but it's not complicated.
Most of the issue comes from the fact that people don't want to examine their own consumption habits.
You can assign blame wherever you want, it definitely starts with the politicians who let this mania occur. But at the same time, don't forget to look in the mirror. Your dollar is a vote for that bullshit if you patronize banks, stores, or any organization that outsources your work to India.
You can get everything you need from local places.
What local places? you don't even know what "local" could mean for me...
I love idiots who assume the sun stops when they can't see it
I don't know where you live dummy lol
Do your own work, don't squabble with me
I refuse to believe that you live in a locality where a Canadian tire exists, but the suppliers that supply Canadian tire also magically don't exist. It's because you're not actually talking in good faith, you're just a rude person
I don’t know where you live dummy lol
yet immediately jumped to the conclusion there must be "local" stores that I just don't patron because "coNVeniENce"

What suppliers? Chinese suppliers? oh yes I have access to those as well... Canadian tire RARELY carries anything local
HH varies wildly from franchise to franchise.
What's the alternative? I guess Rona has pivoted towards whatever Canadian Tire is doing, but it's not a 1:1 competitor. Haven't been to Réno Dépot in ages. Home Hardware?
Rona bought Totem, an actual Canadian company, and tried to run them, terribly, until they got swallowed up by their shit brand and are now all gone. I'm so pissed about that, I loved how Totem worked. It had a drive-in lumber yard and staff that cared.
Rona is own by Murica
Sure is, Home Hardware is the only other Canadian hardware store. Réno Dépôt is owned by RONA.
I love Home Hardware though, it seems like they let their franchisees do whatever they want, which gives each store a different vibe. If you're ever in Westmount, Hogg Hardware is great, they even sell Lego.
Unfortunately I'm not able to give a recommendation. I live a fairly non-materialistic lifestyle and most of what I own I salvage, fix, or barter. I realize that's not much of an answer... Or is it I don't know? I have mostly checked out of the big box store lifestyle.
Rona was Canadian owned at one point, but that's gone. McMunn & Yates? They were started in the '50s in Manitoba and I think they're still fully Canadian.
Not participating in the problem is the based answer
Thank you, that's exactly how I feel!
Brought my car there just last week to have tires changed. Lo and behold they didn't outsource the job.
Also, I don't consider IT to be the fabric of society.

Yet another reason not to shop at crappy tire.
Since the Bay closed, it's the only good source for housewares, unfortunately.
Canadian Tired
Colour me surprised.
It's 2025... At what point do we finally start looking at data robberies the same way we look at bank robberies?
