Right to repair spell checkers.

A tax credit to repair appliances? That seems like a nice idea.

As someone who worked in an electronic repair shop as a kid in the early 2000s, I can get behind this.

The big scam going on right now is washers. They all have aluminum basket supports that hold the drum. The drums are stainless steel in pricier models, but the support is raw aluminum. Detergents have high pH and heat causes the aluminum to break down and corrode at a set rate designed by the manufacturers to just exceed the warranty. They can be replaced, but the parts are rarely in stock and the washers ware purposely designed to require almost complete dissassembly over many hours to do the swap, making repair cost ineffective.

Nest thermostats: that thing you bought will not work after October because Google will brick it. No local API options offered.

Phones used to have removable backing to swap a battery or access to repair, now they are glued shut.

will not work after October because Google will brick it.

[Google's announcement notes that the older thermostats won't become bricks pasted to your wall even after support comes to an end. When software updates and Google cloud service access ends on October 25, 2025, those of you with a 1st or 2nd generation Nest won't be able to control the Thermostat via the Google Home app or Assistant.

Essentially, your older Nest thermostat will become a dumb thermostat with a nice screen to control temperature and scheduling.](https://www.tomsguide.com/home/smart-home/google-announces-end-of-support-for-1st-and-2nd-gen-nest-thermostats-what-you-need-to-know)
