Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

If you guys think we're getting a truth and reconciliation hearing after this administration, then you have too much faith in the dead institutions which led to Trump's election. The United States is over, after this. 100 years from now it will be obvious in hindsight

Oh, it's never going back the way it was.

This is clearly fascism, those are clearly concentration camps, and that's the Gestapo running around.

You don't just walk that back.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

If you want to go down the path of defeatism without putting up a fight, then yeah. Go fulfil your prophecy.

[–] Deflated0ne@lemmy.world -1 points 22 minutes ago (1 children)

Spades are broken. Die is cast. Etc.

This country might limp along for a few decades. But the USA as we knew it is dead. Do you really think Chump is the only fascist with aspirations that big? Do you think the Heritage Foundation goes away when the One Big Beautiful Obituary finally drops? Do you think they won't try again? Do you think MAGA won't enthusiastically leap at the next swaggering fascist?

Our institutions are not built to withstand such direct assault. The intentional dismantling we've been seeing. The regulatory, legislative, legal, and economic capture that has occurred. If it isn't a strongman it'll be some businessman who isn't a failure. One with big Corp backing.

The sheer momentum of the dollar and power of US financialization will keep things going. The branding will remain. But little if anything will stop our continuing decline. Saying nothing of the damage done internationally. Geopolitically. The US can never be trusted on anything ever again longer than a 4 year timetable because at any time we could elect another used car salesman or failed gameshow host who wants to be a dictator.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 1 points 9 minutes ago

I'm sorry, who's saying the US will go back to what it once was? If you want to lay down and die, go right ahead, but do it on your own time.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 0 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

lol putting up a fight? who is doing that? Muricans jumped from "too lazy to vote via mail" to "we need to get guns" to "when somebdy fixes this..." as if they think that would happen in their lifetime

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 1 points 12 minutes ago

Did you know that Republicans took it upon themselves to curb mail-in voting to prepare for the election and made it as hard as possible to do so in some states? And that many ballots were discarded for the most ridiculous reasons? And that there was a record turnout at the latest election, but for some reason, electronic ballots were discarded?

You can call people lazy all you want but that doesn't reflect reality.

Personally I can't picture an ICE agent that is anticipating a regime change within their lifetime, but I could be wrong.

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 51 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Personally I can't picture an ICE agent that is anticipating a regime change within their lifetime, but I could be wrong.

There is a very specific reason that ICE agents and other collaborators strive to hide their identities.

They would not feel the need to do so if they believed, deep down where it counts, that they were on the right side of history, and that the regime will last indefinitely.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 27 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

I don’t think they’re that introspective. Pretty sure they all think “this is so anteefuh can’t find out who I am and kidnap muh kids”. Action hero delusions

[–] leftthegroup@lemmings.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Every single person who fears anti fascism deserves death. Full stop. President, House, Senate, ICE, janitor. No exceptions.

Most will be too stupid, and will be the ones using I Was Just Following Orders as their defense.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 11 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Neither did the S.S.

A paralel that I'm sure they both openly embrace, and which is also completely lost on them.

When will the regime fall? Can we please just skip to the end now!

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 20 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

It won't be falling via a peaceful transfer of power. Voters made sure of that. However it happens, it will be violent.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 0 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Shenanigans. This is fear mongering and will just lead to people not bothering to vote.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

murican excessive self centeredness already took care of that

[–] octopus_ink@slrpnk.net 15 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (3 children)

You know I've had this feeling for a long time. But I really have it now.

Look at everything going on, everything he's doing. If AOC (arbitrary example, but he'll call any Democrat a "radical marxist" through the entire campaign no matter who it is) is elected in 2028, will he and his handlers go "well, at least it will take them a long time to unfuck things?" No, there's no way that happens.

Maybe we'll get an honest election and maybe we'll learn the results of it. I don't think he leaves in Jan 2029 without a fight no matter who wins, unless it's Vance, and maybe not even then.

And to be clear, there's no way the Dems will run AOC or anyone like her. We'll probably get someone even further right than Kamala or Biden since it seems to be Republican votes they actually want now.

I only have hope for 2028 actually resulting in Trump no longer being president if the cheeseburgers take him before then, or the 2026 midterms are not only a blue wave, but also entirely above board and free of shenanigans.

[–] Scotty_Trees@lemmy.world 2 points 40 minutes ago

The reality is there will be no blue wave in the mid terms. Image and think on that and how fucked we might be...

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

FYI, the progressives won the last DNC election. The old guard no longer calls the shots, which is why they are getting more & more desperate to try to appear that they are still calling the shots.

[–] octopus_ink@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 hour ago

I've heard this.

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

We’re getting my family ready to leave if the ‘26 elections aren’t fair and a blue wave. If my fellow morons haven’t figured it out by next year there’s not going to me anything left to fight with besides our quite fragile lives.

[–] octopus_ink@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 hours ago

Unless we win the lottery or my long lost cousin from somewhereelseistan calls to let me know they've got a spot for us, we're sheltering in place unfortunately.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 6 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

The regime won't just fall. It'll need people to make it fall, and I haven't seen enough people stepping up to make that happen. Americans are still too passive, thinking that waving signs around one day a few weeks ago will overthrow a fascist. It's a start, but nowhere near the end.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 4 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

I honestly fear the US will be a fascist dictatorship for the rest of my life and beyond. North Korea has been a fascist dictatorship all my life

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 2 points 16 hours ago

It's a possibility. People need to wake up and realize the seriousness of what's happening. And they are waking up. I'm just not sure if it's quick enough.

[–] LilB0kChoy@midwest.social 5 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

No. Some Americans still haven't learned their lesson.

No, too late for that. Now we need to go through the part with all the violence and the living envying the dead.

[–] WraithGear@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

I don’t see the good in C.Y.A. When doing the damage right now… after all the horrors they get to snitch to try to dodge accountability, how expected of them.

[–] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 7 points 16 hours ago

some ice agents are better criminals than others.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 8 points 16 hours ago (1 children)
[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 18 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Don't blow their cover

It's a tough call.

If enough paranoia can be generated within ICE, the more resources they'll need to divert to internal investigations, and the less effective they'll be while still having power.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 2 points 2 hours ago

Makes sense

[–] sunflowercowboy@feddit.org 4 points 15 hours ago

He just said dont blow their cover.....

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 10 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Or for a promotion right now if they find out any of their peers have any family of hired help that are immigrants. Why wait?

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Or for a promotion right now if they find out any of their peers have any family of hired help that are immigrants. Why wait?

Yes. Collecting evidence such as this, such that when the regime falls, the person who earned that promotion through betrayal would not be able to escape justice easily.

You've provided an excellent example of who I'd collect as much data as humanly possible on.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 2 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

I mean if you're putting yourself in an ice officers shoes, I already can't really get there in my mind.

Nope.

As in nope, none of them are smart enough, or nope, they place loyalty to each other over self-interest?

[–] skeezix@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago (9 children)

As in nope thinking the regime is going to fall is just copium hopium

While I share your pessimism, I also know that some of these dudes are just scared to lose their job. I'm not saying that they are innocent just that they are in the same boat we all are with our jobs. If I got fired I'd be bankrupt in a month if not less. I'm sure there are plenty of ICE that we don't see that are freaking the fuck out. The only ones we see in clips online are the ones that will immediately volunteer when asked if they want to go arrest some brown people.

And to reiterate, that does not make these guys innocent. They are complacent and watching this happen without lifting a finger to help. The "just following orders" crowd, if you will.

Where are people getting this idea that there will ever be any type of trails for this? I've even seen some talking about the Hague, which is particularly laughable because the US has an invasion policy specifically regarding the Hague, predating Trump.
