reminder that there is an active genocide in Burma (Myanmar) and trump just banned asylum seekers from there

I hope he puts Wakanda and Sokovia on the list

Finally, someone is doing something about the hordes of Equatorial Guineans and Togolese roaming through every major city in America.

Poor Haiti is always getting shit on.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Haiti had the nerve to actually fight back against their slavers and win their independence. Well you see all the slavers that controlled trade couldn't have those ideas catching on, so they blocked out and isolated Haiti from many trade deals. Haiti got fucked with paying France all the money France lost from the rebellion.

The 1791–1804 Haitian Revolution made Haiti the first sovereign state in the Caribbean, the second republic in the Americas, the first country in the Americas to officially abolish slavery, and the only country in history established by a slave revolt.

"It wouldn't happen if it weren't filled with black people!" - Republicans

They hate it because it was the place where the slaves rose up and overthrew the colonial government.

[–] Poayjay@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago

The best, most patriotic people I served with were two guys from Haiti.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Why Iran? Like the stereotypical Iranian refugee is a doctor who wants rights

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

Honestly surprised Palestine isn't in there. The man hates those people.

[–] ijedi1234@sh.itjust.works 57 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ah, but including Palestine means recognizing it as a sovereign nation. I believe Trump views Palestine as a region in rebellion against Israel.

[–] Guidy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Which is really weird when you realize they helped elect him.

More specifically all the American people who refused to vote for Harris because she wasn’t pro-Palestine enough for them did.

Sure, it was an absolutely stupid take as Trump is far, far worse for everyone, but there you go.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmings.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Palestine isn't a country, or you can bet it would have been on the list.

[–] raltoid@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Palestine isn’t a country

Because the US keeps vetoing any UN recognition. It's considered a sovereign state in most of the world.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The fuck did Laos and Chad do? Like I can kinda get the reasoning for the rest even if it's a fucking stupid thing to do regardless but aren't Laos and Chad relatively stable right now? Did I miss something?

[–] meco03211@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (2 children)

My money is on him thinking Chad is a person.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmings.world 3 points 1 day ago

"I hate that guy!”

It means lake and yeah I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if that was a thing. Yeah know I'm bordline a NEET because I make interviewers nervous yet these fucken ghouls can be dumber than shit and control the fucken country, seems a bit unfair.

Also I make interviewers nervous because I don't blink enough and radiat Autism and PTSD, I hate that getting a job requires what amounts to a vibe check.

He's still in the Vietnam era, dodging the draft and tending to his bone spurs.

[–] Hikuro93@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (1 children)

So according to his justification it's "to prevent what happened to Europe". The Europe which heavily aided the US in the retaliatory invasions post 9/11 through NATO's Article 5, also the same Europe that has seen the floods of people fleeing the warzones in hopes of finding asylum, not to mention a large increase in terrorist activity in several of its countries? The Europe that's still dealing with the middle eastern fallout while US sits safe far away with the "big, beautiful ocean" in the middle? That Europe?

Funny. I thought Europe (like NATO) didn't help the US in any way according to them, some countries (cough cough UK cough cough) didn't even see war for the last 40 or 50 years, right?

There's a very special place in hell for the human-shaped plagues who torment mankind at large. A special place fit for certain men with funny mustaches or orange skin.

[–] Hadriscus@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

Unfortunately there is no such place, so it is paramount that these people get what they deserve in this life.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Let me guess before reading the article or comments... South Africa isn't on the banned list

[–] Venus_Ziegenfalle@feddit.org 8 points 1 day ago

It's not. It's actually almost as if there's some kind of underlying racial bias in this list but I need to check further.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Thank god my (Burmese) daughter in law got her citizenship, but that may not matter to these asshats.

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 7 points 1 day ago

They'll just revoke her citizenship, then come and arrest you for knowing her...

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmings.world 5 points 1 day ago

I've got a good friend from Venezuela who got her citizenship last December. She thinks that makes her safe, but I worry about her. These people don't even respect birthright citizenship, they aren't going to respect new citizens, especially from a nation they've decided to demonize.

Basically, if you were born somewhere else, they want you out.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Interesting, all mostly or extremely poor, in the midst of civil wars, military back coups, etc.

Is this some kind of tough negotiating tactic again from our orange dementia patient in chief?

[–] Bbbbbbbbbbb@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Im not up to speed on Laos, are they going through something or are they just......Trump wanted an L country?

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Dunno, they're one of the fastest growing economies since 2009 according to Wikipedia. Also a communist government, and landlocked. My assumption was that they're just poor, but i dont actually have any insight into why they included them in this list.

[–] Melchior@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

During the Vietnam war the US financed the Hmong to fight against the Communist in Laos, when the war ended the US allowed them to come to the US. So for somebody like Trump he might just believe that is still a problem.

Laos is also common origin country for sex slaves. So Trump might change his mind.....

[–] kautau@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Fascism always needs an enemy. Start with this list, slowly grow it over time while most Americans are blissfully unaware until it finally affects them but is too late.

"The ban, which goes into effect on Monday, bars travel to the United States by citizens of Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen."
