More like America Worst Policy

This article is a bunch of fluff. Do we have any data to support the claim that tourism is down? What are the projected losses based on?

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 3 points 9 minutes ago* (last edited 8 minutes ago)

There's multiple reports over multiple weeks showing declines of 15-25% in automobile crossings at the Canada/USA borders. Some flights have reduced frequency as well.

E.g

https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/article/land-border-crossings-into-the-united-states-down-by-hundreds-of-thousands-data-shows/

https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/article/these-airlines-paused-or-cancelled-canada-us-flights-in-the-wake-of-the-trade-war/

Now, I can't speak to losses, and this is only from Canada, but it's not nothing either.

Data from our may long weekend last week will probably be out soon as well.

[–] SereneSadie@lemmy.myserv.one 6 points 35 minutes ago

I mean, I do have to concede that multiple accounts of abuse by TSA and border patrol, including solitary confinement without charge, plus many countries issuing a travel warning for America isn't 'data and projected losses'...

[–] turtlesareneat@discuss.online 5 points 38 minutes ago

IDK why they don't link to the actual report they're referencing but it appears they've been a real player in travel/tourism data for several decades.

[–] firepenny@lemmy.world 9 points 3 hours ago

No shit, fuck around and find out.

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 30 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

Good. I hope thousands of landlords can’t afford their extra homes and are forced to sell, driving down housing prices.

[–] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Last time housing prices crashed in the USA, people's incomes crashed as well or their mortgage obtaining ability did. All it meant was that the already rich and corporations were able to buy up real estate cheap. Did not remotely help 90% of the population.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

All it meant was that the already rich and corporations were able to buy up real estate cheap.

Something like half of all real estate is owned by private equity.

If you genuinely care about wealth consolidation among the ultra-rich, and you seriously want to do something about it, there's a Little Red Book with some helpful advice.

But just propping up Boomer real estate values for another ten years isn't an answer either. It's a losing game to pretend you can outwit Blackrock on home ownership.

[–] cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

They will only be replaced by richer landlords

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

Yeah, private capital can just roll in and buy it all up, great!

[–] GoodOleAmerika@lemmy.world 17 points 8 hours ago

Nice. Hope tipping system goes away.

[–] Prior_Industry@lemmy.world 10 points 8 hours ago

All patriotic Americans should only vacation within the US or pay a holiday tariff to do so abroad!

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 35 points 12 hours ago

I live in a major tourist city, and the word around town is that there will be a steep decline from foreign visitors, but many are still coming anyway, because they've had their vacations booked for months, and it's too late to change.

But if this keeps up, next summer will be a bloodbath.

[–] TonyOstrich@lemmy.world 46 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Let's fucking go! Keep it up everyone, make people here really see and feel the consequences.

I'm under no illusion that anyone who voted for this will "feel bad" or regret their vote. As we have been seeing the people who voted for this do not regret their decision perse. However, the hate that fuels them will only take them so far. If things get bad enough quick enough they might be able to remember it the next time (if there ever is one). I think the cult following of Trump and their emotional sunk cost fallacy won't let them see that voting for Trump was a bad idea, but there is a small chance they will recognize and reject it in whoever comes next.

I'm under no illusion the above will actually happen, I just think it's the best that can be hoped for.

[–] CatDogL0ver@lemmy.world 18 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I work with some of those "haters". They will never blame Trump. Even when their wallets are getting hurt, they will just blame Democrats and the world.

One haters I work with worship Trump and she is an Asian. How ironic

[–] Liberal_Ghost@lemmy.zip 10 points 8 hours ago

Same here. Everyone I work with is pretty MAGA. They all suck

[–] pigup@lemmy.world 41 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

I'm happy because this will hurt Florida's crappy economy the most.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 19 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Florida is a shitty place to visit anyways, it's all mosquitos.

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 5 points 5 hours ago

The mosquito is the state bird of Florida.

[–] Neverbeaten@lemmy.world 11 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Mosquitos interrupted by daily rain and a hurricane or two every year.

[–] lagoon8622@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 hours ago

Not to mention the sinkholes. And anacondas and alligators and that crazy slug that eats houses or some shit. And worst of all, the Floridians

[–] reiterationstation@lemm.ee 7 points 12 hours ago

Maybe people will finally stay the fuck out of that state.

[–] pinheadednightmare@lemm.ee 25 points 15 hours ago (4 children)

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. As an American, I hope America falls into a depression.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 14 points 12 hours ago

I hope it ends with a Green New Deal

[–] reiterationstation@lemm.ee 12 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

What a shit situation that they have Americans hoping their own country fails.

I absolutely do not hope for a depression. You will NEVER see small business again. You will NEVER own a house. Our future will be utterly gone.

What we need is what can’t be said.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 48 minutes ago

It's like finding out your dog has rabies. You don't really want to watch your friend suffer and you certainly don't want it to watch it inflict this horror on anyone else.

I absolutely do not hope for a depression. You will NEVER see small business again. You will NEVER own a house. Our future will be utterly gone.

Would forestalling a plunge in GDP prevent that? It seems like our finance sector controls everything - lock, stock, and barrel. The only way out is for this system of suffocating domination to end. And that's going to mean abandoning a fixation on (often fictitious) capital growth at all costs.

That doesn't mean people will simply stop doing business with one another. It doesn't mean personal homes done for.

It does mean that - on paper - GDP is going to fall, as all that hot air comes out of a FIRE sector inflated to the moon.

But it also means abolishing a ton of personal debts, ridding ourselves of bullshit jobs, and reorganizing our economic administration towards value creation rather than labor extraction
