Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

built over the next three years

Fucking LOL!!

It'll take that long to get the first draft of the requirements document for this stupid thing.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 33 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah, given Trump's timelines on building the wall, I think we can safely expect this to never be finished. This will be yet another indefinite Republican drain on American tax dollars.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's one of those things that sounds great, but requires a monumental effort to build and this administration lacks any kind of competence to make it happen.

Hegseth said we couldn't even block hypersonic missiles so China could sink our entire fleet in minutes, yet thinks we will not only be able to build a defense system well enough to block them but block them from hitting all of the U.S. and Canada in 3 years, even from space. Who could possibly believe that?

[–] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

Yeah, upgrading basic government accounting software can take longer than that.

[–] limer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 year ago

Many will believe it; the nay sayers will be ignored by the propaganda

[–] tartarin@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

In fact, they don't care about Canada as long as the nuclear weapons detonate far enough from the border.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ah so Mexico and the Caribbean need protection as well then.

[–] tartarin@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Not really since they aren't on the shortest path of Russian missiles to the USA.

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Ah, but it will funnel said taxpayer's money into the right cronies' pockets.

[–] Zerlyna@lemmy.world 33 points 1 year ago (3 children)

And how do we pay for this?

[–] assembly@lemmy.world 29 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You see…we cut taxes for the wealthiest Americans and then…a tariff happens…and then Mexico pays for it?

[–] SinningStromgald@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

You forgot the really important part: deporting "immigrants".

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 year ago

Canada is paying for it with tariffs

[–] sylver_dragon@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So, who's got the inside track on which company is paying the largest bribe for the contract? If tax dollars are going to be diverted to line Trump's pockets, we might as well catch some of that money by riding the stock bump when the contract is announced. Maybe get some puts on the stock if we manage to elect a less corrupt President in four years.

Surprise! Musk is ready to step in, because they will tailor the requirements to him, and he lies about everything anyway so no other bidders would even come close.

The anti-nuclear weapon shield we all agreed not to develop because it nullifies the nuclear deterrent, and makes nuclear war inevitable?

That shield?

[–] TheMightyCat@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

I mean the US has fielded and expanded GBI for years now and no nuclear war has broken out.

As an EU citizen hearing daily how putin threatens to kill us all I'm glad we are investing into missile defense aswell, instead of our lives being in the hands of a madman.

[–] kruhmaster@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 year ago

This is some Mr. Burns-type shit

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He'll cancel it as soon as someone explains to him it's not a physical dome and he can't "go see it."

Tell him it's already installed, they just made it clear for clarity reasons.

[–] Darkonion@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

For just $1 billion down payment, I will build it in 2 years for half of that. I pinky promise.

[–] Envy@fedia.io 6 points 1 year ago

And the houthis and hamas are gonna pay for it!

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

I fucking hate Axios. Their format sucks, and they don't even explain what this is. It's related to the one in Israel, but Canada wants to be covered somehow?

[–] Hello_there@fedia.io 2 points 1 year ago

More like 175 trillion ?
