Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in [email protected]. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to any of the mods: @[email protected], @[email protected], or @[email protected].

The US wants central and eastern European countries to join its path of “energy freedom” instead of following the wider region’s transition to a net zero economy, Energy Secretary Chris Wright said in Warsaw.

...

“Central Europe faces a time for choosing,” Wright told conference participants. “We warmly welcome you to join us on Team Energy Freedom and Prosperity for Citizens.”

...

“In fact, the clarion conclusion from economic studies of climate change is that net zero 2050 is absolutely the wrong goal,” he said. “Not only is it unachievable, but the blind pursuit of it will cause, is causing far more human damage than climate change itself.”

President Trump has repeatedly called on Europe to buy more American energy products if the bloc wants to avoid tariffs.

I hope the EU responds strongly and with a punishment for trying to meddle inside of EU's Affairs. (The Heritage Foundation - the assholes behind Project 2025 - want to split up the European Union)

Maybe they should review American financed Organisations in Europe, and put them under stricter rules.
Or they should negotiate with California and other blue states for a trade deal like they wanted, to undermine the legitimacy of the Trump Administration and inciting the fire there

That's an amazing idea. Geopolitically the EU benefits from a divided US anyway so it's not like they have a reason to worry about maintaining the status quo.

Ignoring the self serving bullshit of the US.This seems so nuts, even all the capitalistic incentives point to renewables plus batteries for the future. Besides who in Eastern Europe wants to change from one energy dictator to the next. I can't see this being a succes in the long run.

It's just some capitalists fighting other capitalists. The renewable ones are still the weaker though.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago

This is not wrong, but only in the sense of everything can be made money off. That's just capitalism.

But apart from that, renewables are better for people, for the environment and for power distribution (no pun intended) because people can have solar energy themselves making energy more decentralized.

So what if somebody does get rich on solar and wind? Its important to not become too dependent on one Capitalist supplying some central piece of the non-fossil tech stack, for sure, but I think your simplification is not doing the whole topic justice and equating two very different things.

It's like saying, plant based meat is bad because some capitalist is getting rich. Okay, rather keep eating meat, more than before, just to spite the evil startups producing veggie sausages!

Even their own companies are going fossil free.

Let's just ignore these old-fashioned fossil people

Doesn’t the US’s geography rule it out as an efficient source of ‘energy products’ for europe?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago

Oil and Gas Industry says don't worry about 50 Celsius in summer, we have a free ice cream, it's a scheme.

So the cyber attack that caused the Spanish outage came from the US? They liked it when they were asked to ship some lgp to Europe ?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

There's zero evidence the Spanish power outage was caused by a cyber attack, that's just fear mongering.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I know, and everyone is now acting like they were the hacker/cracker of the year saying "it was me, it was me!" . I wish it were a cyber attack actually, cause it's not nice that it can happen to anyone. For sure it was not a cut cable accident, so it was a big mistake . I was thinking also of a possible power surge coming from solar plants due to the sudden summertime we're experiencing
