7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

Top Trump official Stephen Miller's recent declaration that anyone who "preaches hate for America" will face deportation has ignited alarm online, with critics warning the statement disregards First Amendment protections.

Social media users and legal analysts raised immediate concerns, pointing out that expressing dissent or criticism of the government is protected under the First Amendment. Some worried the administration was veering into authoritarian territory.

The backlash has reignited broader debates over the limits of free speech, especially as civil liberties fall under scrutiny. While immigration enforcement remains a core theme of President Donald Trump's platform, critics are increasingly questioning whether rhetoric like Miller's is a precursor to more aggressive suppression of dissent.

That goes against the first amendment, which I think makes it anti-american. Can Stephen Miller start by deporting himself?

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 70 points 10 months ago (7 children)

they're no longer following the Constitution, in case anyone has noticed ...

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 24 points 10 months ago

They never were. Unless they added things that helped them or a cohort at a given time. cf: prohibition, its repeal, etc.

I love America. I swore to defend it against all enemies. I do not love what it is doing or who the government defines as enemies.

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 16 points 10 months ago (1 children)

When will you recognize that the government is behaving as if citizens are the enemy and itself is actually doing the same things enemies do..

[–] nulluser@lemmy.world 14 points 10 months ago

That's pretty much what they said.

[–] unmagical@lemmy.ml 10 points 10 months ago

I love who the government defines as enemies. I don't love that the government defines them as enemies.

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 44 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Trump isn't America, the government isn't America, fuck them. The people are America.

[–] FelixMortane@lemmy.ca 18 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Unless the people do something about, Trump and the government are exactly America. If no one stops it and just complies, then it is endorsement by default.

Really hate the milktoast way these articles are written. "critics warning" "ignited alarm online" "backlash has ignited debate" ffs just say the Trump admin announced the end of free speech. That is literally what happened.

Some worried the administration was veering into authoritarian territory.

FFS WE'VE BEEN THERE THIS ISN'T VEERING THIS IS FOLLOWING A STRAIGHT LINE ALONG THE PATH WE'VE ALREADY BEEN ON FUCK

[–] ngdev@lemm.ee 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

milktoast is a pretty milquetoast breakfast, though i will admit it actually pairs well with a milk steak boiled hard

I hate America. Come at me bro.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 18 points 10 months ago (1 children)

What does "hate for america" even mean? Does "I think mcdonalds fries are garbage" count? or "republicans are whiny little maggots"?

[–] Whitebrow@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

Pretty sure this comment alone is like 5 reasons by itself

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 18 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

But he's doing it right now??? Ohh he's conflating the current administration with America even though all their values are in complete contradiction to everything this country is supposed to stand for. Got it.

Whats that joke Reagan cracked back in the 80s about Russian Soviets not allowed to criticise their government?

Yea, huh. Wonder what happened to that.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 14 points 10 months ago (1 children)

So let's say that SCOTUS rules that this policy infringes on the first amendment. Then they deport another person. Who's to stop doing it?

They are going to milk the extrajudicial rendition until there is an actual outbreak of violence to try and stop it.

Then Trump will send those people involved into a gulag, too.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago

Agreed the purpose is to cause people to act and then move in to crush them. All the while playing the victim. Of course that play doesn't always work.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 14 points 10 months ago

Disagreeing with the dear leader will also be the same as preaching hate for America

Not clapping enthusiastic enough will also be the same as preaching hate for America

[–] ChristOnACracker@lemmy.world 12 points 10 months ago (1 children)

"Worries users" - is the USA an operating system now?

Is AI writing these posts? The statement makes sense in context in the full post, but the headline absolutely does not - leads me to believe yes, AI slop.

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Here it is, the mask comes off and they tell us to comply or die. We are officially in a fascist dictatorship.

This is where we use our community organizations to alert when and where ICE will be showing up, and making sure armed support shows up to make sure ICE steps down or dies whenever they slink out of the shadows.

If they come for you to deport you to El Salvador you need to kill as many as possible or try to escape to Mexico/Canada, because going to El Salvador is a death sentence anyway.

I don't hate America. America is a continent. It would be really silly to hate an entire continent.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 6 points 10 months ago

Was not expecting the purposefully obtuse European response in this thread.

[–] barnaclebutt@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I'm pretty sure Stephen Miller is just undead Goebbels resurrected in a skin suit. Not as smart, but the instincts are intact.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 8 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Trump once said that this guy, Kapo Stephen "PeeWee Himmler" Miller, told him that he'd like to see America's population reduced from the current 335 million down to 100 million.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Surely you guys can take out Stephen Miller before he takes out 225 million of you?

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 7 points 10 months ago (3 children)

He's essentially daring us to use the 2nd Amendment, which is exactly what they want. Then they can declare Martial Law, and suspend the Mid-term elections.

They cant allow the 2026 Mid-Term to happen. Its shaping up to be a bloodbath for MAGA, and if they lose either chamber, the Dems will control investigative committees with subpoena and arrest power. So they are looking for an excuse to suspend elections for the first time in our history.

So they will be trying to goad us into violence through their words and actions, and eventually they will incite violence at the protests, which will be nearly daily by next summer. They have to time it carefully, and suspend elections close enough to election day that the courts can't react in time. That means next summer will be really ugly.

This is just the start.

Skip the first and head right for the second I see.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

Stephen Miller is the one preaching hate for America, the weird little twerp.

[–] streetfestival@lemmy.ca 7 points 10 months ago

This is the same bogus and weaponizable logic that legitimate criticism of Israel's genocide = 'antisemitism' is. If you want to call legitimate criticism of the illegal and unethical actions of this POTUS administration 'hate for America', the notion that deportations (of US-born people) are going to ramp up shortly just became very real for me

[–] Foni@lemm.ee 7 points 10 months ago

I wish I could say I'm surprised.
