Might as well give them glass beads considering the value of the land with its mineral deposits.

[–] nightwatch_admin@feddit.nl 10 points 1 year ago

Glass beads may soon be worth more than US dollars if Drumpf gets to play economy like this for much longer.

[–] INHALE_VEGETABLES@aussie.zone 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not everyone is going to take it, so why even do it? I don't get it, am I retarded or is it retarded?

[–] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 34 points 1 year ago (1 children)

US here: don't even think about it. A Trump never pays their debts.

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Well, he’s planning to use taxpayer money, not his own.

And by the time he’s done with the economy, that $10,000 may not be enough to buy them dinner .

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 30 points 1 year ago (3 children)

No I don’t want Greenland. I’d rather we get DC and PR proper representation.

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

It's not about wanting it or not. Just the thought of buying people off like that is just respectless and childish.

Besides, Greenland has said no to becoming American several times. It's time to give up on that absurd dream

It’s probably more egalitarian than how they got Alaska and the Louisiana territories.

Only in that they’d be throwing change at the population that they unilaterally annexed against their will for the “inconvenience” before a Texas/Hawaii style regime change.

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Back then it was not uncommon to buy areas like this. Times have changed

[–] Kanda@reddthat.com 2 points 1 year ago

But this time we are offering a laughable token amount of money?

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Trump doesn't give a fuck about what you, me, or anyone else wants.

[–] Bigfish@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 1 year ago

But those have brown people.. so he'd never go for it

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

-can't find 1 person in El Salvador prison.

-promise to find everyone in greenland to give them 10k.

Suuuuure.

Why not? It's just another promise.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 year ago

Oh come on, that is just really ridiculously sad

I'm sure you'll find a few loser takers but the vast majority will see through this shit and just give you the finger.

Not to mention that greenland has, what, 60k inhabitants? At 10k per person, that is 600 million dollar, just to take the country? Cheapskates.

Then for the Greenland government I'd take this as a giant fuck-you in the face, a direct attack on your democracy. I would not take kindly to this

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 11 points 1 year ago

How much is that in beads and infected blankets?

[–] blakenong@lemmings.world 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Man, selling your future for less than a year of rent.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This doesn't even cover half a year of rent where I live... Maybe just barely a quarter of a year, though.

[–] blakenong@lemmings.world 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah that’s… 4.5 months for me.

[–] Faydaikin@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I highly doubt any of the Inuits or Danes living there would accept anything from him.

They've been wanting independence, to be their own country, for so long. They'd never go for selling themselves to the US or anyone else.

[–] blakenong@lemmings.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I mean, you’d be surprised. If he said “we will buy you out, and you can be your own country, but we get special rights to your land for mining and a military base” … they might want independence in spite of that. The fingers are crossed, of course, as he will fail to pass that property along to them after purchase.

[–] Faydaikin@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think they realize that would be a very illconceived short-term solution to their wishes.

Plus they already have projects in the works for a more sustainable approach on their own terms. Hydroponic Farms and such.

[–] blakenong@lemmings.world 0 points 1 year ago

I thought the same about 2024 haha

[–] jeena@piefed.jeena.net 10 points 1 year ago

Why don't they just make a referendum like Putin in Crimea 2014?

[–] tty5@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Greenland gets about that much per person in subsidies every year, so gl with that.

Significantly more, actually. Especially when you consider the social safety net that includes such things as universal health care, five weeks paid leave minimum, and 50 weeks paid parental leave.

There's no way that the pittance being floated would cover a TENTH of that for a full year, let alone having your people and country molested by EXTREMELY under-regulated predatory corporations for all eternity while having no hope of achieving better conditions through political representation.

You'd have to be a COMPLETE idiot to want anything to do with a deal that awful.

[–] thefluffiest@feddit.nl 8 points 1 year ago

You mean 10.000 of those severely deflated dollars?

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sadly, I think this would pass in Alberta.

Is Alberta pretty much the Texassippi of Canada?

[–] Lodespawn@aussie.zone 6 points 1 year ago

That number appears to be missing several 0's

[–] JohnDClay@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That'd be about half a billion dollars overall. Crazy thing is with the massive unpopularity of being annexed, I think even with a $10k bribe most people would still be against it.

Nothing crazy about it. 10k each/half a billion overall is an infinitesimal pittance compared to what the people and government of Greenland would lose.

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 4 points 1 year ago

Great, they can use that to pay for any future healthcare needs. Under a USA system, that's houkd last a year.

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

lol this guy doesn't get it. the trick of being a fascist dictator is to say completely outrageous things and then make people forget about it by doing other less outrageous but nonetheless outrageous shit (and as a bonus get less reaction on the less outrageous shit). It is not trying to actually do everything you say you will do.
