What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

You are using lemmy for free thanks to the work of dessalines among others. You really shouldn't call him out on developing, if you want something done you are free to do it yourself.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

Exactly. Call him out on stupid takes and inconsistent moderation. How he spends his free time is up to him, and it's up to us if we want to call him out on stupid takes.

Good luck on the functional blocking, they don't want it to be used against them and know it would be because nobody wants to hear their shit but they require unwilling participants to proselytize to who will also respond mostly negatively and reinforce their victim complex. It's intentionally like this and always will be. The Mormons/JW actually use a similar tactic with the door to door bullshit, they don't want to convert you, it's about what it's doing psychologically to the church member.

Really rooting for piefed honestly.

Really rooting for piefed honestly.

Problem is that's it's not just a question of political leaning, it's also one of software architecture. Lemmy is written in Rust, Piefed in Python.

I have doubts about the scalability of Python software to user numbers like Lemmy World has.

He derives value off his development through that control he can flex thanks to it, thats why he prob spends the tome developing a social media platform to control one of the large instances.

Not sure if they really even want to develop FOSS.

I mean, PRC, the country they love so much are working on WeChat, a closed source proprietary app. And China is requiring Real-ID verifications, so its clear tankies don't care about privacy either. Maybe they should work in Tencent, and we should just fork it?

This headline feels belittling of the effort needed in software development. "If dessalines spent just 14 more minutes every day on coding, we would have nearly all the features we want!"

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I think he's spending a lot more than 14 minutes everyday on lemmy

Certainly but the actual problem here is how they enforce their agenda, not the actual time. I don't like the fact that someone can just tell someone go back to work when they have no right to dictate how they would spend their time. If they spend 12 hours dumb scrolling then that's their choice, you don't get to have a say.

Again, the problem is how agenda, not how they choose to spend their time.

I think we have similar amounts of activity levels, and my screen time on this PWA for a day I was entirely on my phone for this was 12 minutes

Just to understand your point here:

Rule 1 only allows links to "real news sources"

The source is the personal blog of an canadian author.

Is your criticism just about the Action they took or in general for taking Action here?

Nah, when it comes to .ml admin removals when they say Rule 1 or Rule 2 they're not referencing comm rules, they're referencing instance rules (very rarely will you see an actual mod modding)

Rule 1 is "officially" No bigotry and Rule 2 is "officially" be respectful, however unofficially they use them as catch-alls for any speech they don't like. Eg speech critical of China, Russia, NK or speech that calls out misinfo or propaganda from those regimes

This post is more evidence of their censorship of speech they don't like, this comm has plenty of other posts if you'd like to review further evidence of their censorship and the kind of propaganda outlets they allow to further their tankie agenda

The original blog post referenced is known to be a pro-Russia Misinfo spreader, and is covered on another post here
