I heard a little of the debate on this and it seemed like there was no consideration of open platforms, or whatever happens after Bluesky inevitably enshittifies.
I have no problem with it them posting on Bluesky, but everything should also be on a site with RSS, or a mailing list, or something open.
Surely we can give them tools to do this without relying on big American tech firms.
I think in this case, there just isn't awareness.
There was a survey. Many of us made staffers aware. And former councilor Waye Mason had a Mastodon account that he abandoned back in October. Council is aware. They have clearly just quietly rejected the idea.
Being told something and getting it are two completely different things. Most people just don’t understand the difference -we have failed at educating here. One thing I have noticed is that people understand avoiding American companies, even when they don’t understand avoiding closed/walled gardens. It’s a decent hook to get people reconsidering, but it’s a long slow process.
100% agreed. It just seems so naive.
Things are terrible on this commercial walled garden platform, we should migrate to the new trendy commercial walled garden platform.
I always say in these threads, governments should run their own mastodon instances.
Why don't you volunteer to manage and post from an official Halifax Lemmy or Mastadon account or something similar?
I am seeing a lot of "Why not this option" without seeing anyone volunteering for the job.
I actually felt a little bit guilty after writing the comment. I don't think volunteering to run it is the answer, but I should at least be advocating directly instead of just complaining online.
Our town went from posting on twitter to mirroring every post to their website as well as twitter, Facebook, etc. There must be tools out there to facilitate this.
Honestly getting the conversation started is always helpful. I was just pointing out that there is always a lack of people to do the thing that we all agree should be done, myself included.
I think the Government should just pay to have some kind of app built for official communications. Cut all middle men out of the equation and make an official and functional platform for Canadians to connect with our politicians.
Couple that with increased range for the CBC and information will flow like water.
