They've already picked up people with proof of citizenship on them, claiming they thought the papers were fake. And once you're picked up, there's no due process so there's no chance for you to prove your citizenship before they chuck you into a camp.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 4 days ago

And if that camp is in another country like El Salvador, they'll tell the judge there's nothing they can do because US laws don't apply in El Salvador.

This is probably the most annoying part about right-winged nutjobs. They scream and howl about censorship and "the left" taking away their free speech. Now that the right-winged nutjobs are in charge, they take away much more than just free speech. And they're still the victims..

Every accusation is a confession.

If the government can disappear one person without due process, then they can disappear any person without due process.

Neither will the color of your skin.

That's part of why everyone should have cared about BLM, even for purely selfish reasons. The cops will kill you if they don't like you. They have enough room to not like black people AND to not like you.

How much more risk are they really taking if they report a random, white citizen vs a brown green card holder? Neither is legal. Does it matter.

I don't know why people think they're safe just because they're not a minority. Our police problem has spread. Now it's the cops, ICE, half the judges, and the administration.

The only difference is that Americans have guns just like the cops for this exact reason.

If the outcome is dying in a prison for speaking out, don't let them take you alive. use that second ammendment to take out some fascists instead.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:

There must be in-groups whom the law protectes but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

"This is what happens in a dictatorship, and these are test cases," said Eric Lee, a lawyer who represents Momodou Taal, a Cornell University Ph.D. student and advocate for Palestinian rights whose visa was revoked. "If the government can get away with doing this to these students, it can do it to everybody in this country. Your citizenship won't save you. ... Your views will be next."

Taal sued the government on the grounds of free speech this year. After the case was filed, Immigration and Customs Enforcement called on Taal to turn himself in for deportation. Taal didn't turn himself in and continued the case until just over a week ago, when he issued a public statement on X sharing that he had left the country.

"Given what we have seen across the United States," he wrote, "I have lost faith that a favourable ruling from the courts would guarantee my personal safety and ability to express my beliefs. I have lost faith I could walk the streets without being abducted."

The suit has now been withdrawn, but Taal's lawyers say the implications of this case go well beyond their client.

"The First Amendment applies to people who are physically in the United States, regardless of their alienage, regardless of what country they were born in, regardless of the color of their skin, regardless of their immigration status," Lee said. "By … saying that attending a protest makes one a threat to American foreign policy, the administration is admitting that the Constitution is getting in the way of the fight for democracy. Something is not right there."

Guantanamo Bay is going to be full of, checks notes, oh wow, I guess they never existed.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 4 days ago

We're finding out a hard fact in life, courts can say anything they want and you can have all the laws you want but if no one enforces them they are worthless.

I guess this is still preferable to protesting outside their mansions, for some reason? You might as well start going for their homes now, because if occupying a sidewalk and peaceful protest becomes a reason to be arrested then you can't protest anymore, right? What about your job and kids, your mortgage? They won't have a future if you go out and get arrested at a protest, so stay safe and stay docile.

Or, you might as well go all the way. No half measures, and all that.
