The same website makes metal buttons, resin buttons with real bugs inside, and more. Overall it's not really anything I'm personally interested, but I love that the deck has enough support, and is tinker friendly enough, that stuff like this is even an option.

Rip the poor bugs. Leave them in their habitat folks.

I was curious if they were using farmed bugs or something else

From the page for the bug Dpads:

Rest assured, no creepy crawlies were harmed in creating these unique dpads – each bug was respectfully collected after natural passing, discovered in serene settings like windowsills, tangled in spider webs, or peacefully outdoors. These DPADs are not just gaming accessories; they're a tribute to the beauty of nature, combined with the thrill of Halloween! 🕷🍂

I really wonder how they'd consistently source that, but mostly I just hope I never ever hear about it again.

I mean, custom steam deck resin buttons containing insects is probably niche enough not to have to source many of them.

Stealing food from spiders? Not cool man! Stick with candy from babies.

🎵 🎶 Everybody must get stoned! 🎵🎶

[–] JoShmoe@ani.social 3 points 8 months ago

Whoops that was a typo. Stones, I love getting stones.

Wow, talking about Rock and Stone!

Rock and roll and stone!

These must feel chilly to the touch, sounds super nice.

As someone who prefers the Nintendo layout, it would be cool if they offered that as an option.

Just swap the buttons to match Nintendo layout, and then there's a toggle in the steam settings>controller to switch to Nintendo layout

Edit ok actually I guess that won't work, the b button specifically is special and can't be swapped looks like.

[–] urata@lemmy.world 17 points 8 months ago (3 children)

pretty sure the buttons are "keyed" in a way that doesn't let you put them in the wrong slot. It's been that way for controllers I took apart.

[–] kayzeekayzee@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 8 months ago

also the B key is curved to match the slope of the edge of the console

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 6 points 8 months ago

Genuinely love that feature on my PS3 controller just so I can’t put the wrong buttons in whenever I’m doing in maintenance

[–] LettucePrey@lemm.ee 3 points 8 months ago

Yup, this is correct.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 8 months ago

People on Etsy sell custom buttons, including Nintendo ones.

They've also recently added an option for layout-agnostic glyphs that show the position of the button (the four hollow circles with the button in question filled in) which I kind of prefer

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 6 points 8 months ago

Or get blank buttons and re-map to the Nintendo config.

...resin buttons with real bugs inside...

You completely lost me there. Don't come looking or I will torch the place with a lighter.

As an avid bug hater (creepy crawlies are not for me, ever), I would never use something like that. The metal and stone buttons? Yeah, maybe, depending on price, but definitely not the bug resin buttons.
